Background and Interests

I graduated from the University or Reading with a First Class Honours Degree in 1979, and took a DPhil in Politics at Oxford University in 1983. I have taught at Keele University and the Open University, and was visiting Professor at Lulea University ( Sweden) from 1997-2002.

Current/Past Research

I work in the field of environmental political theory, with particular reference to the relationship between ‘ecologism’ and other modern political ideologies, and to the tensions between environmental sustainability as a social objective, and other objectives such as deepening democracy and increasing social justice.

Future Ideas for Research

I am now working on three topics: the idea of ‘post-cosmopolitanism’ and its implications for international and intergenerational obligation, environmental citizenship education in the context of the secondary school national curriculum in England, and the role of non-human nature in the development of modern political theory.

Publications/Papers

My most recent monograph is Citizenship and the Environment (Oxford University Press, 2003), and I have just edited Political Theory and the Ecological Challenge (Cambridge University Press, 2006) with Robyn Eckersley.
