Research Institute for Law, Politics and Justice

9-11 November 2006
Location: Research Institute for Law, Politics and Justice (RILPJ) -
Chancellor's Building, Keele University

The Research Institute for Law, Politics and Justice (RILPJ) at Keele University, in collaboration with the Research Committee of Socio-Legal Studies of the German Society of Sociology and the German Socio-Legal Association, invites socio-legal scholars from Britain and Germany to present papers and discuss research at the First British-German Socio-Legal Workshop.

This interdisciplinary workshop will provide an opportunity for exploring mutual interests in research, for exchanging ideas and comparative perspectives, and for establishing closer ties between the two socio-legal communities. The organisers invite established and young researchers - including political scientists, criminologists, sociologists, philosophers and lawyers - to discuss emerging trends and key concepts in law, politics and justice. We will in particular provide opportunities for young scholars to start cross-national networks. We envision streams and discussion groups under the following broad topic areas, but will in addition provide an open forum for papers which do not fall into these themes:

Our topics:

  • Regulating in transnational domains : The global economy, illegal markets, corporate governance and environmental challenges
  • The bodies of law and politics : Gender, commodification, public health and ethics
  • Difference and social justice : Migration, citizenship, and cultural difference
  • Environment and technologies: regulating new technologies, security and technology
  • Mediating politics and law: Media and the law, images of law and law’s imagination
  • Justice and human rights : International relations, human rights and sovereignty

Special Programme features:

  • opening lecture
  • thematic and plenary sessions
  • plenary session with representatives from German and British Research Councils, on collaborative research, networking and funding
