Welcome to the Research Institute for Life Course Studiesat Keele University. The Institute aims to support and stimulate high quality research and enterprise by bringing together a multidisciplinary group of researchers working on a range of health and social concerns across the life course, from childhood through to old age.

It draws on existing strengths at Keele in the fields of ageing (with one of the largest groups of researchers working in the field of gerontology in the UK); families, community and society; health, rehabiliation and well-being; and psychology. While existing groups have distinctive research agendas, the Institute aims to build and expand upon these areas, encourage inter-disciplinary work within and beyond the Institute, and foster new collaborations.

Members are supported to pursue research of international distinction, to maintain strong relationships with user groups, to seek funding from research councils and comparable bodies, and to engage in the organisation of seminars and conferences for staff and students. The Institute has a managerial, co-ordinating and advisory role, a developing infrastructure for research for stimulating grant applications, managing research time, and providing a supportive training environment for postgraduate research students (supported by the University Graduate School).

Keele University - Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences

World-class interdisciplinary research

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Science is the largest Faculty in the University and is home to world-class scholars and research groups working across a range of topics and themes. The Faculty is proud of its success in the 2008 RAE, where 85% of the research assessed was classified as world-leading and of international importance. Research and postgraduate supervision is organised through Research Institutes which support a number of major research centres. The University has made a substantial investment in an exciting new building – The Moser Centre – to support high quality research and postgraduate work in the humanities and social sciences. There is now a strong commitment to expanding postgraduate research as a vital part of the University’s identity as a research-intensive institution.

The University is aiming to provide up to 30 studentships across the four research Institutes located in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Closing date for applications is 28th February 2010.
