Memory decline and medication in Parkinson's Disease
Dr Nicky Edelstyn and colleagues from Keele University (Mr Tom Shepherd, Professor Julius Sim) and the University Hospital of North Staffordshire (Dr Simon Ellis, Ms Sharon Hurlstone, Dr Keira Watts) have been awarded a grant from the National Institute of Health Research. Their feasibility trial is the first stage of a larger programme of study investigating the effects on memory of certain types of drugs used routinely by clinicians to manage the motor symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease. This study builds on previous work by this group showing poorer memory when Parkinson’s patients are medicated compared to the same patients tested following a period of medication withdrawal. These lab-findings are consistent with patients own accounts of poorer memory when they take their drugs as compared to when the effects of their drugs are wearing off.
