5. RESEARCH DEGREES COMMITTEE (reports to Senate)
Scope: All matters concerning the management of research degrees and the academic progress of research students
(a) Terms of reference
To make recommendations to Graduate School Board on:
1 The entry requirements for students admitted to postgraduate research programmes.
To make recommendations to Senate on:
2 The award of research degrees.
To be responsible for, and report to Graduate School Board on:
3 The supervision, progress and examination of postgraduate research students.
4* Approving the appointment of internal and external examiners for research degrees.
5 Considering reports from internal examiners and external examiners, reports on oral examinations, and recommendations for the award of research degrees.
6* Granting periods of leave of absence and extensions to periods of registration for students registered for research degrees, acting within the regulations for such degrees.
7* Receiving, and approving action as appropriate upon, reports from supervisors of students registered for research degrees.
8* By making recommendation to Graduate School Board, receiving, and recommending appropriate action upon reports of inadequate supervision.
(b) Delegated powers
The Research Degrees Committee has delegated authority to take action under items 4, 6, 7 and 8 (*starred).
(c) Constitution
Member of University Learning and Teaching Committee (nominated by the Vice-Chancellor and appointed by the Graduate School Board) (in the chair) (3-year term)
One member from each Department’s Postgraduate Committee (nominated by the Head of Department) (7)Total: 8
