Ede and Ravenscroft

Award type: Cheque

Amount: £1,000

This prize was established in 1989 to mark the tercentenary of the firm. The prize of £1,000 is awarded in the year following first graduation to the graduates judged to be the most outstanding amongst those Keele graduates proceeding to undertake a full-time research degree at Keele. The prize shall be awarded by a Committee consisting of the Vice-Chancellor, the Deans, the Director of Planning and Academic Administration, and the Senior Leadership Group.

Farquharson Fund Field Studies Prizes

Award type: Cheque

Amount: £50

These prizes are derived from the assets of the Institute of Sociology and Le Play House Press, which were made over to the University College by the Institute of Sociology in 1955. The Institute of Sociology was founded by Alexander and Dorothea Farquharson, and the prizes are intended to promote the objects for which the Institute of Sociology was incorporated.

There are three prizes awarded annually. Undergraduate and Postgraduate students of not more than one year's standing are eligible for entry.

The prizes will be awarded for an account of an original piece of fieldwork carried out by the candidate. For the purpose of these prizes, fieldwork should be interpreted as:

  1. a study of the relationship between communities, settlements or neighbourhoods and the environment in which they are set and out of which they have grown, or
  2. the sociological study of human communities and the use of sociological studies in education

Entries should be sent to the Records and Examinations team no later than 30th September of the year in which the applicant wishes to be considered a candidate for the prize. If in any one year the work of the candidates does not reach a sufficiently high standard, the prize will not be awarded. In such an event, the value of the prize shall be added to the capital sum. The prizes may, in any year, be divided at the discretion of the judges, or any lesser amount than the total may be awarded at the discretion of the judges.

Hugh Leech Travelling Scholarship

Award type: Cheque

Amount: to be announced annually

The Hugh Leech Memorial Fund was opened in 1967 after the death of Hugh Leech, then a Senior Lecturer in the Department of History, to provide financial assistance to Keele students for the purpose of study in Europe. The Scholarship, deriving from the interest of the Fund, which remains open, was established in 1972.

All registered students are eligible for the scholarships, which are normally advertised and awarded on two occasions annually. The value in each particular year is indicated at the time of the advertisement. Applications, which should include details of proposed travel and study, will be considered on two occasions each year and should be sent to the Records and Examinations team by 1st May.

Responsibility for administering the Fund, for determining the value of the scholarship each year, and for making the award is vested in the Hugh Leech Travelling Scholarship Committee. The award in any one year may, at the discretion of the committee, be withheld altogether or divided in any proportion among two or more applicants. 


Neil and Gina Smith Student of the Year Award

Award type: Cheque

Amount: £5,000

This annual award, sponsored by Neil and Gina Smith, will be presented at the Summer Graduation Ceremony. It is available to the student who has demonstrated the essential criteria of outstanding academic excellence/achievement, together with outstanding achievement/contribution as an individual to student life and/or the University. Nominations or applications from candidates will be sought at the start of the Spring Semester, with a closing deadline of the end of February each year. The Awarding Panel will comprise Neil and Gina Smith, the Vice-Chancellor, the President of the Students' Union, a Faculty Dean, a Head of School, a lay member of Council, and an external community representative. The successful applicant will be notified after the results of the Final Examinations are published.

Principal Year Prizes 

Award type: Cheque

Amount: £100

Up to eight prizes may be awarded in each of the first and second principal years of study:

  • Faculty of Health: one prize is available to candidates whose Principal subjects are both based in this Faculty
  • Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences: two prizes are available to candidates whose Principal subjects are both based in this Faculty
  • Faculty of Natural Sciences: two prizes are available to candidates whose Principal subjects are both based in this Faculty
  • Three prizes are available for candidates taking Principal subjects from different Faculties. 

Prizes will be awarded to candidates with the best average mark across all modules, and achieving at least 120 credits for the year, subject to the approval of the Heads of the Principal Departments concerned, the Deans of the Faculties, and the Director of Planning and Academic Administration. Prizes are reported to Senate.

Wedgwood Essay Prize

Award type: Book token

Amount: £40

This prize is open to all undergraduates of the University who submit an essay on an approved historical subject. No piece of work that is to be submitted as a Finals dissertation in History, or is to be used as the basis of such a dissertation, shall be eligible for the prize. In addition, no piece of work which has already been accepted as a Keele Finals dissertation shall be eligible for the prize. Further details regarding choice of subject, length and presentation may be obtained from the School of Humanities.

The closing date is 30th September in each year, except for candidates graduating in that year whose entries must be in before Degree Day. Entries should be sent to the School Manager, including History. In the event of no essay of sufficient merit being submitted, the Head of the School may make an alternative recommendation for an award. No candidate may be awarded the prize more than once. 

The Senate shall appoint assessors. Dr C.V. Wedgwood acted as a permanent assessor until her death.

Deen Support Fund (PhD)

Award type: Cheque

Amount: £100

The fund provides hardship assistance to overseas PhD students from developing countries. It also provides financial support to PhD students attending conferences where they are presenting a paper. The award(s) will be made annually from the interest provided by the capital fund.

Application should be made to the Head of School. An annual report on the awards made will be submitted to Professor S M Deen (or his named successor).

Clare Coleman Memorial Prize

Award type: Cheque

Amount: £40

This prize commemorates Clare Coleman, who read English and Philosophy at Keele from 1984 to 1987, and who died after a long illness just before taking her final examinations.

The prize is awarded to a final year student reading English or Philosophy for special achievement in their studies.

Bruce Centre Prize

This prize may be awarded each year by the Senate, on the recommendation of the Head of Department of Humanities, for distinguished overall performance in the courses for the MRes in American Literature and US History and Politics.

Jim Roberts Memorial Prize

Award type: Book token

Amount: £35

Jim Roberts joined the University College as a porter in Keele Hall in 1951 and was successively steward of the Students' Union for five years and then caretaker of the Walter Moberly Hall for nearly twenty year until his retirement in 1975. He died a few months later. The fund was founded to establish a prize for the student who has contributed most to amateur music making at Keele during the academic year. The prize is awarded annually in July on the recommendation of the Head of the Music Department; the student may or may not be a Music student. Nominations may be made by members of the academic staff of the Music Department or such other persons as from time to time may be specified by the Senate. 

If in one year it is deemed that there are two or three equally deserving candidates, the prize may be divided. If in any year there is considered to be no suitable candidate, the prize will not be awarded.

King Alfred Prize in Medieval English

Award type: Book token

Amount: £25

This prize, which derives from the interest on a capital sum contributed by the teachers of Old and Middle English in the School of Humanities, will be awarded annually for an essay on a subject falling within the field of Medieval English studies. Competition for the prize is open to any student reading principal English.

The competition will be judged by the tutors in Old and Middle English. Candidates may have a free choice of topic provided that the title is agreed with the tutors in Old and Middle English before the end of the Spring Term. Essays should be handed in by the Friday of the first full teaching week of the Summer Term.

The examiners reserve the right not to award the prize in any year when no essay of sufficient merit is submitted.

Marjorie Cruickshank Local History Prize

Award type: Cheque

Amount: £100

This prize is awarded for the best local history study written by an undergraduate or postgraduate, or by a student registered for a course in Adult Education. The work should be of not less than 7,000 words. The prize will be awarded by the Senate on the nomination of the Head of School. The closing date is 30th September in each year, by which date entries should reach the School Manager.

Montford Instrumental Scholarship

Award type: Cheque

Amount: £200

This scholarship may be awarded annually for tenure in the first and second Principal years. Montford scholars are required to play in such orchestral and chamber groups as the Head of the Music Department may determine. Players of any orchestral instrument may apply. Full details of this scholarship can be obtained from the Music Department.

Paul Rolo Award

Award type: Cheque

Amount: to be determined by the School

This award was founded in honour of Professor P.J.V. Rolo, who taught at the University from 1951 to 1982, in recognition of his devoted service to the Keele community. The award will be made from time to time by the Senate on the recommendation of the Head of School, including History, either to a student reading Principal History or registered for postgraduate study within the History Department. 

 

Regina Oppman Prize

Award type: Cheque

Amount: not less than £20

This prize was established in 1974 by Dr John Coutouvidis in recognition of the generous help provided to him in his doctoral studies by Mrs. Regina Oppman, Chief Archivist of the Polish Institute from 1949 to 1980. In 1984, this prize was endowed on a permanent basis by the Polish Institute. It is normally awarded annually to the postgraduate student, registered in the History Department, who has, in the opinion of the Head of School, made the most significant advance in scholarly work during the year.

Wedgwood History Dissertation Prize

Amount: £40

This prize is awarded each year for the best dissertation in the History Bachelor's degree Special Subject examination. Assessment shall be by the History Finals Examination Board.

Shalimar Ward Memorial Prize

Award type: Book token

Amount: £40

The Shalimar Ward Memorial Trust was established to commemorate Shalimar Ward, an American student who is remembered for her enthusiastic contributions to a diverse range of interests, who read Electronics and Management Science at Keele from 1986 to 1988, and who died following a cycling accident in February 1988.

Two book prizes, of equal value, are awarded annually to two second year students by Senate.  Consideration will be given to both the contributions made by the candidates to the life and well-being of the University and of their academic performance.

This prize was established in 2007. The prize is supported by the £2,000 awarded to Mark Davys (Teaching Fellow in the School) for Individual Excellence in Learning and Teaching in 2006/07. Recommendations for the CPE Prize are considered annually by the School of Law CPE Examination Board. The prize will be awarded at the absolute discretion of the Board, to the student or students demonstrating the highest overall academic performance each year. The prize is available to both full-time and part-time students.

Maxwell Law Prize

Award type: Book token (Sweet and Maxwell publications)

Amount: £150

This award is given to a student reading for a first degree in Law. The subjects taken at the examinations for which the prize is awarded must be in Law.

Michael Akehurst Memorial Fund

Award type: Cheque

Amount: £50

The fund was established by colleagues and students of Professor Michael Akehurst, who died in October 1989, to commemorate his work in International Law and his contribution to Keele. The Fund is used in three ways:

  1. awards to students in International or EC Law
  2. the dedication of a part of the Law Library as the Michael Akehurst Collection and the award of bursaries
  3. to assist with the payment of overseas student fees for postgraduate courses in Law

Michael Whincup Prize

Amount: £50

This prize was founded as a result of a gift by Mr Michael Whincup on his retirement as a Reader in Law. The prize will be awarded on the recommendation of the Departmental Examination Board. It is awarded to the student whose examination performance in the law papers is adjudged best in the second Principal year. The prize may be shared between students whose performance is equally meritorious.

Life Sciences 


Badcock Ecological Bursary

Award type: Cheque

Amount: announced annually in November

The bursary (endowed by Molly Badcock, former Lecturer in Ecological Sciences) is awarded annually to a postgraduate student working on an Ecological topic, to enable him/her to attend a reputable conference (such as the Winter Meeting of the British Ecological Society) at which papers will be presented which relate to the student's work or general ecological education. The award will be made on the recommendation of the supervisor in consultation with senior ecological staff by the Head of the School of Life Sciences. The main criterion will be the perceived merit of the student, but preference will be given to those in financial need and ineligible to claim funds from other sources.

The award will be paid on evidence of attendance and expenditure, but may be made available as an advance on application. If in any year there is no student of sufficient merit, or in sufficient need, the award will not be made, but the interest will be added to the capital sum invested. 

 

Campion Prize in Biology

Award type: Book token

This prize, from money made available by Dr Mary Campion, a lecturer in the Department for over thirty year, is awarded annually to the second Principal year Biology student who, in the opinion of the departmental staff, has shown most diligence whilst studying Biology.

Kieran Fry and James Bradley Prize for Contribution

Award type: Cheque

Amount: £50

This prize was established in 2003 to commemorate two year 1 students who were tragically killed in a road traffic accident. The prize amounts to the interest from a fund established by Mr Martin Black and will be awarded to a student reading either Principal Biochemistry or Biomedical Studies and who is deemed to have made a significant contribution to the life and well-being of the School of Life Sciences. Candidates for the prize may be nominated by fellow students or staff and the recipient will be decided by an awarding committee chaired by the Head of School.

The award will be used as a travel scholarship for a student to undertake their elective module overseas, particularly Africa, during Year 5, or to undertake an intercalated degree, preferably geriatric medicine or addiction.

Merck Sharpe and Dohme Prize

This prize is awarded at the end of each academic year to the highest scoring student on any individual taught module in the Masters in Medical Science course (MMedSci). In the event of a tie for the highest mark, the student with the highest average score across all the modules in that academic year will be judged the winner.

This award is presented annually to a Learning Beyond Registration student in their final year in the School of Nursing and Midwifery who has achieved the highest aggregate mark.

The Rosemont Prize

Award type: Cheque

Amount: £250

This prize was established by Professor Stephen Chapman in 2013 in association with Jan Flynn of Rosemont Pharmaceuticals. It consits of a £250 prize plus a glass plaque which remains on display in the School, and a smaller version for the student to retain. The prize was established to encourage professional development in student pharmacists. It is awarded annually for an outstanding contribution to the School of Pharmacy, and to extra-curricular professional activities, as evidenced by students' professional portfolios.   

The Royal Pharmaceutical Society Award for the Best Student on the MPharm Degree Programme

Award type: Cheque

Amount: £200

This award will be made to a final year student on the MPharm programme with the best academic and professional achievements. The availability of the award is renewed on a yearly basis.

Marjorie Cruickshank Education Prizes

This prize is awarded in memory of Dr Mervyn Taylor, previous Head of the Department of Education, who died in 1998. The prize is financed out of the interest of monies donated by colleagues and friends in the University.

The prize is awarded annually by the Senate, on the recommendation of the Head of School, to the Principal Education student producing the best dissertation on the Educational Studies undergraduate course.

Andrew Robertson Postgraduate Travel Bursary

Award type: Cheque

Amount: to be determined by the School

This bursary is awarded in memory of Andrew Robertson, a Keele graduate. It is available to postgraduate research students to make it possible for them to attend international conferences to give papers, to participate in poster displays, to undertake research trips or pieces of fieldwork, or similar activities. The bursary is awarded to members of Andrew Robertson's department: Psychology and Computer Science. Applications are invited annually and should be made to the Andrew Robertson Travel Bursary Committee via the Department of Psychology. Applications must provide a letter of support from their supervisor and documentation supporting all costs claimed. Awards are made at the discretion of the Andrew Robertson Travel Bursary Committee and if, in any year, the Committee feels it is not appropriate to make an award, the interest will be added to the capital sum.

Catrin Pickles Physiotherapy Scholarship

The Catrin Pickles Physiotherapy Scholarship is supported by an endowment from the Pickles family in memory of Catrin Pickles, a Keele University physiotherapy student. The award supports, in part, the travel and subsistence costs of physiotherapy students to enable them to undertake an elective charity based placement. These placements are designed to support the work of Therapies Unite, a Mexico-based rehabilitation charity, or, if this is not possible, to undertake an elective charity based placement in South America.

Dame Agnes Hunt Research Prize

This prize was established in 2003 by alumni from the Oswestry School of Physiotherapy. The Oswestry School was based at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt until 1994 when the School moved to Keele.

Alan Walton Memorial Prize

British Geophysical Association Prize

This prize, established in 2013, is provided by the British Geophysical Association. The prize will be awarded to the best dissertation on a geophysical topic. The British Geophysical Association is a Joint Association of the Geological Society of London and the Royal Astronomical Society, the aims of which are to promote the subject of geophysics, and particularly to strengthen the relationship between geology and geophysics in the UK.

Burnaby Memorial Prize

This prize is awarded in memory of Dr Thomas Patrick Burnaby, Senior Lecturer in Geology, who died in 1968. It will be awarded annually on the recommendation of the Head of School of Physical and Geographical Sciences for the best essay mark in the first year Geology Honours course.

Elsie Beaver Prize in Geography

This prize was established in 1974 by the Donation of Mrs Elsie Beaver, who was Map Curator in the Department of Geography, and the wife of the first Professor of Geography.

The prize is awarded for the best piece of individual fieldwork submitted by a final year Geography student as part of the degree requirements, other than the one which might be awarded the Farquharson Prize.

Exley Prize

This prize, intended to honour the long and distinguished service of Dr Colin S Exley, Senior Lecturer in Geology, was established in 1986 from donations by his colleagues and former students. The prize will be awarded annually to the student submitting the best piece of independent geological mapping as part of the Geology Honours degree course.

G W T Barnett Postgraduate Memorial Bursary

The G W T Barnett Scholarship Fund was established in memory of the late George W T Barnett, the proprietor of a geophysical business in Shrewsbury, working with the mining industry.

This bursary is designed to foster research in mining geophysics. It is open to postgraduate students to enable them to undertake research or pieces of fieldwork, to attend international conferences, to give papers, to participate in poster displays, or in other similar scholarly activities. Recipients are expected to submit a written report on their use of the bursary within two months of completion of their project.

Gurnos Jones Prize

This prize, provided by the Local Section of the Royal Society of Chemistry, is awarded from time to time to a student reading Level III Chemistry and is at the end of the final year of study. Professor Gurnos Jones taught for nearly 40 years as a member of the Chemistry Department at Keele, serving as Head of Department and also Dean of Science. With Mr Ken Wilde from Staffordshire University, he was instrumental in establishing the new Royal Society of Chemistry North Staffordshire Local Section and has served as Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer of the Local Section at various times.

Harold Springall Prize

The Springall Prize Fund was established in 1975, on the retirement of the founding Professor of Chemistry, Professor H D Springall, by donations from former graduates and postgraduates of the Department, as a mark of their affection and esteem. The prize is awarded from time to time to a student reading Level II Chemistry and who is at the end of the penultimate year of study.

Ian Harmer Memorial Prize

This prize was established in 1979 to commemorate Ian Harmer, a student in his second Principal year, who was tragically killed in October 1978. It is awarded to a student reading Principal Geography and Geology who has completed their penultimate year of study.

John Tebby Prize

This prize, provided by the Local Section of the Royal Society of Chemistry, is awarded to a student reading Level I Principal Chemistry and who is at the end of the first year of study. Professor John Tebby was appointed to a Chair in organic chemistry at Staffordshire University in 1987 and was Head of the Department of Chemistry and Biology in 1981 until his retirement in 1998. He was a Research Associate at Keele for a number of years and was a member of the Court of Keele University from 1988 to 1998. He has served as Chairman, Vice chairman and Secretary of the Royal Society of Chemistry North Staffordshire Local Section at various times over the last 40 years.

Royal Society of Chemistry Prize (3)

These three prizes, provided by the Local Society of the Royal Society of Chemistry, are awarded to students reading Level I, Level II and Level III Medicinal Chemistry. The Royal Society of Chemistry is the largest organisation in Europe fro advancing the chemical sciences. Supported by a worldwide network of members and an international publishing business, the activities of the RSC span education, conferences, science policy and the promotion of chemistry to the public.

Tekdata-Cryoconnect Prize

Tekdata-Cryoconnect is a technology company based in Stoke-on-Trent which manuafactures parts (specialist cables, wiring and wiring harnesses) that are used in spacecraft launched by NASA and ESA. They have particular expertise in Astrophysics satellites, operating at cryogenic temperatures, such as Herschel and the forthcoming James Webb Space Telescope.

The prize, sponsored by Tekdata-Cryconnect was established in 2011 and will be awarded to the Astrophysics student achieving the best performance in their level 3 Astrophysics/Physics modules. This will be assessed and ratified by the Astrophysics level 3 examination board and a recommendation made by the Head of School, who will then recommend to Senate.

Shalimar Ward Memorial Prize

The Shalimar Ward Memorial Trust was established to commemorate Shalimar Ward, an American student who is remembered for her enthusiastic contributions to a diverse range of interests, who read Electronics and Management Science at Keele from 1986 to 1988, and who died following a cycling accident in February 1988.

Two book prizes, of equal value, are awarded annually to two second year students by Senate.  Consideration will be given to both the contributions made by the candidates to the life and well-being of the University and of their academic performance.

The John Myers' Awards

Amount: £150 for Winner, £50 for Runner-Up

This prize is administered by the North Staffordshire Group of the Geologists' Association (NSGGA) in honour of the distinguished geoscientist and teacher John Myers BSc FRGS FGS. The NSGGA evaluates selected dissertation project work to select two winners of the award, one from the three-year Geology/Geoscience degree programmes and the other from the four-year MGeoscience. 

The prize awarded to the student on the three-year Geology/Geoscience degree programme will be listed on both the student transcript and the HEAR, and will be announced at graduation.

 

The Micropalaeontology Society Student Award

Award type: One year membership of the Micropalaeontology Society

This award is to encourage and reward student engagement and achievement in the field of micropalaeontology. It is awarded to the student who demonstrates the best performance in the module 'Micropalaeontology: Principles and Applications'.

The Mineralogical Society Student Award

Award type: Two years membership of the Mineralogy Society and Certificate

Instituted in 1876, the Mineralogical Society of Great Britain and Ireland has the general object of advancing the knowledge of the science of mineralogy and its application to other subjects including crystallography, geochemistry, petrology, environmental science and economic geology. This award is given to the student with the best performance in palaeontology in the first two years of their degree.

The Palaeontological Association Student Award

Award type: Two years membership of the Palaeontological Association

The Palaeontological Association was founded in 1957 and has become one of the world's leading learned societies in this field. The Association is a registered charity that promotes the study of palaeontology and its allied sciences through publication of original research and field guides, sponsorship of meetings and field excursions, provision of web resources and information and a program of annual awards. This award is given to the student with the best performance in palaeontology in the first two years of their degree.

The Wynne Student Prize

Award type: Cheque and Lead Crystal Bowl

Amount: £100

This prize is awarded by the Institute for Materials, Minerals and Mining and the Western Institute for Mining and Minerals, and sponsored by local engineering and environmental consultants Wardell Armstrong LLP. The prize is given in memory of Mr F H Wynne CBE of Staffordshire who died in 1943. Mr Wynne was a well-known Mining Inspector and became the Chief Mine Inspector for Staffordshire in 1938. Mr Wynne was also an early and active member of the North Staffordshire Institute of Mining Engineers, which now forms part of the IMMM. The prize is awarded to the best Master of Geoscience dissertation relevant to materials, minerals and mining.

Clare Coleman Memorial Prize

This prize commemorate Clare Coleman, who read English and Philosophy at Keele from 1984 to 1987, and who died after a long illness just before taking her final examinations.

The prize is awarded to a final year student reading English or Philosophy for special achievement in their studies.

John D Lees Memorial Bursary

This bursary was established to commemorate Dr John David Lees, Reader in American Politics at Keele, who died in February 1986.

Dr Lees was a member of the Department of American Studies and Politics from 1964, and a founder member of the David Bruce Centre for American Studies in 1969. His American Studies and Political Science colleagues world-wide, his students and former students, friends and family, have established the Fund as a permanent memorial to his devotion to his profession, to the University and to the welfare of his students.

It may be divided between two or more candidates and will be awarded annually. Candidates must be full-time or part-time graduate students at Keele, registered either for the degree of MA by examination in US History and Politics, or for the degree of MA or PhD by research, and specialising in US, Canadian, or Norther Atlantic comparative politics. The bursary will be awarded to facilitate visits to research archives and/or to assist in the completion of their graduate programme by candidates whose personal circumstances require assistance beyond that provided by other sources of support.

Martin Harrison Politics Dissertation Prize
