The 2016 Royal Astronomical Society Service Award for Geophysics has been awarded to Professor Peter Styles. The award citation says that Professor Styles has served the geophysics community and the world at large in at least three ways - by specialising in shallow geophysics with immediate relevance to real-world problems, being a geophysical presence on committees that are engaged with key issues for today's society - fracking, nuclear decommissioning and waste disposal, nuclear weapon test detection - and leading the Geological Society at a difficult time in the middle of the last decade.

It coninues: "We make particular mention of his being chair in 2007 of the DEFRA/DTI Criteria Proposals Group for excluding sites for geological disposal of nuclear waste. This is on top of the usual challenges of an academic career, to which he added being the first distinguished lecturer in environmental geophysics appointed by the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers."

Peter said: "I am very appreciative of the recognition as I have received the William Smith Medal from the Geological Society of London in 2014, The European Federation of Geologists Medal of Merit in 2015 and now this."
