Co-operation agreements strengthen relationships in South East Asia

Professor Trevor McMillan, Professor Richard Luther, with Brunei Minister of Education Vice Chancellor Professor Trevor McMillan and Dean of Internationalisation, Professor Richard Luther, have spent the week in Malaysia and Brunei strengthening Keele’s links in the region.

Keele University enjoys a long history of good relations in South East Asia, with a strong cohort of students from both Malaysia and Brunei and a growing number of links with local partners.

The programme of events for the week included alumni networking receptions in Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Brunei, meetings with key officials - including the Brunei Minister of Higher Education (pictured) - and potential new partners.

The visit also included the signing of new co-operation agreements with two strategic partners.

The first such agreement, a co-operation agreement with Universiti Sains Malaysia, cements Keele University’s long-standing co-operation with the institution in Biological Sciences, including the option for Keele students to study innovative research projects in Malaysia as part of their Keele degree.

The second co-operation agreement with SEGi University Malaysia will establish new partnerships in Business and Psychology.

During the visit, Professor McMillan gave a talk on the progress, achievements and milestones Keele University has obtained in recent years, including being ranked first (of broad-based universities) in the National Student Survey (NSS) for an outstanding third consecutive year. Professor McMillan commented:

“We are delighted that Keele is first in the NSS for the third year running. It is becoming increasingly clear that academic quality, outstanding student support and high employability are the key priorities for the new generation of students.

For Keele, ranking first for employability, satisfaction with course and a consistently high performance in NSS are all markers of the exceptional, high quality and rounded package we offer to students and their subsequent employers.”

After meeting with colleagues and alumni in Kuala Lumpur, Darussalam and Penang, Professor McMillan commented:

“It has been a pleasure to meet with some very enthusiastic Keele alumni, who have all been so positive about their experiences at Keele. We look forward to our new co-operation agreements strengthening our existing relationships in the region.”
