Keele University has been Shortlisted for a prestigious Times Higher Education award in the Widening Participation or Outreach Initiative of the Year category.

The Keele University Outreach Team has been nominated for its Stardome project, where young people are taken on a visual trip around the Galaxy in an inflatable dome.

The dome, which was partially funded by Keele Alumni, reached 34 schools last academic year, with 12 wider community events and has been experienced by over 14,000 people since the launch in 2010.

The session is delivered by a team of student ambassadors and Keele Astrophysics lecturer, Professor Rob Jeffries.

Ant Sutcliffe, who managed the Stardome Project said: “We are delighted to be shortlisted for the award – we are dedicated to providing a quality service for our partner schools and colleges, and take our responsibility of raising the aspirations of the young people in our area very seriously.”

The winner of the award will be announced at an awards evening at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London on 26 November.

John Gill, THE editor, said: “The achievements of our universities, which transform students’ lives and carry out pioneering research day in, day out, deserve to be recognised, and over the last decade the Times Higher Education Awards have become one of the sector’s most hotly anticipated events. This year, the 11th year of the awards, we had more entries than ever before, and are delighted to have such strong shortlists, highlighting the strength of universities the length and breadth of the country.”
