Hearing under the microscope - Inaugural Lecture

Posted on 22 May 2015

David Furness, Professor Cellular Neuroscience at Keele University, will deliver the last in the University's Inaugural Professorial Lecture Series 2014/15  on Tuesday, 2 June, 2015, in the Westminster Theatre,
Chancellor’s Building, on the Keele campus. The title of his lecture is “Hearing under the microscope: a personal view”.

He says: "The ability to communicate via the spoken word and to hear or create music are vital to our quality of life, yet most adults as they age begin to lose that ability. My research of the last thirty years has focused on the microscopic study of our hearing organ, the cochlea, and has been a journey of discovery and understanding of the normal processes of hearing, the way hearing can be impaired in disease and how
it deteriorates with age.

"In this lecture I hope to reveal the highlights of that journey and provide some basis for hope for the hard of hearing in the future."

Keele's programme of Inaugural Lectures are given by newly established professors within the University and aim to give an illuminating account of the speaker's own subject specialism. The lectures, which start at 6
pm in the Westminster Theatre, are chaired by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nick Foskett.

This lecture is free and open to all.
