He is the very thesis of what the Society is about and a deserving recipient of the BES Award

Dr Peter Thomas, Reader in Plant Ecology and deputy head of the School of Life Sciences, has been awarded the 2015 British Ecological Society (BES) Award. The award recognises exceptional service to the BES.

Peter has played a pivotal role in the British Ecological Society as Book Reviews Editor for 21 years and Bulletin Editor for 11 years. By the time Peter stepped down as Book Reviews Editor in December 2014, he had edited over 1,600 book reviews, of which he personally wrote over 800.

His visionary outlook led to the redesign of the Bulletin, commissioning of specialist book reviewers from around the world and adoption of the BES's inspiring ‘e’ logo.

According to Dr Hazel Norman, chief executive of the BES: “Without Peter the Bulletin, the Society and the annual meeting would be very different. His personable and friendly approach is the perfect blend to set people at ease and encourage colleagues to contribute in new and exciting ways. He is the very thesis of what the Society is about and a deserving recipient of the BES Award.”
