The competition provided a fantastic opportunity for students to make a real difference in Staffordshire and beyond

This academic year, between October 2013 and May 2014, Keele and Staffordshire universities took part in a competition with each other, to see which university could collect the most volunteering hours from its students.

Both have very active volunteering departments which attract a healthy amount of student interest. Activities ranged from taking part in National Student Volunteer Week, joining in with community projects, involvement with local charities and projects based on campus such as Keele Marrow, Nightline and Street Team.

The competition was really close, with Keele just piping Staffordshire University to the post with 409 more hours.

The total amount of hours which were logged between the 2 universities was a whopping 15,781!  With minimum wage at £5.03 for 18-20 year olds, this equates to wo/man-hours worth £79,378!

Sarah Amphlett, the Volunteer Manager at KeeleSU expressed her thanks to the 173 Keele students who took part and added that, ‘the competition provided a fantastic opportunity for students to make a real difference in Staffordshire and beyond – well done to Keele students for winning the competition and thanks to all students from Staffordshire University for your valuable, hard work’.
