Stephen Whitehead is Senior Lecturer in Education. Prior to commencing his career in Higher Education he was, for ten years, a programme manager in a Yorkshire FE college, and before that a hotel and restaurant manager in Leeds. Between 1985 and 1991 he was a Yorkshire and Humberside Regional Athletics Coach.

Stephen's research draws primarily on (pro)feminist poststructuralist theories in order to critically explore men and masculinities, identity, gender and management, and organisational behaviour. He has undertaken extensive research into post-1993 Further Education policy and practice. He is currently engaged in research into global representations of men and masculinities, and gender and identity.

Professional and research networks include membership of the Gender Research Forum of the Cabinet Office (UK Gov); International Association of the Study of Men (IASOM) Norway; the British Sociological Association (BSA); the Further Education Research Association (FERA); Universities Council for the Education of Teachers (UCET); and the Organisational Studies Research Group. He has undertaken research collaboration with colleagues from the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and throughout Europe.

Stephen is currently supervising PhD and EdD students whose research includes explorations of masculine identity performances in schools; men in feminized professional terrains; and masculinities and the management of education.
