My academic career is built on a successful professional career in social work where I was a senior child protection practitioner in a local authority setting for around ten years.  I moved to Keele in 1997 to take up a joint position in the then School of Law and the School of Social Work.   Since this time I have taught continuously on the MA in Child Care Law and Practice and on both post graduate and undergraduate social work programmes.  In 2001 I was awarded the Advanced Award in Social Work by the Central Council for Education and Training in Social Work for excellence in teaching and research in social work.   From 2003 – 2006 I was Director of Post Graduate Social Work at Keele.   I completed my PhD in Dec 2006 (Variability in Social Work Practice Outcomes: Factoring in the Human Condition).   In addition to teaching I also supervise students in the field, lead on inter-professional education in social work, have the role of careers liaison officer within social work; the role of year tutor for undergraduate level 2 students and am personal tutor to around 20 students.

I am a member of the British Association for the Study and prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect.

Most recent research was an ethnographical study of multi-professional decision-making in the context of child protection case conferences.  Previous research has included a phenomenological inquiry into the perceptions of child protection social workers as they construct, and work with, emotional and psychological abuse, and an inquiry into the implications for social work practice of freewill and determinism.
