Explore…Your Occupational Health Requirements
Throughout the MPharm course you will come into contact with various patients and members of the public. Our students must meet the occupational health requirements applying to all healthcare professionals in practice. This ensures that neither you, nor any of the people you interact with, are put at risk.
As part of the health and safety processes associated with the Pharmacy course you will need to complete an Occupational Health questionnaire and attend an appointment with the Occupational Health Unit after you have arrived at Keele.
You will be sent an Occupational Health questionnaire prior to enrolment.
Students are required to have evidence of immunity to Mumps, Measles and Rubella (MMR), a BCG scar (or TB immunity) and Varicella immunity. The local NHS Trusts that are involved in providing the hospital pharmacy placements also recommend that students have the Hepatitis B immunisations but this is not compulsory.
For Varicella you must either be certain that you have had chicken pox OR have blood test results which show your immunity OR have two Varicella vaccinations.
For BCG (TB) you should have EITHER a scar to show that you have had the vaccination OR test results to show that you are immune.
For Mumps Measles and Rubella you should have had two MMR immunisations OR have blood test results which show your immunity.
You will be required to show evidence of the dates of any vaccinations you have received or blood tests that have been taken.
If you prefer to sort all this out before you arrive at Keele you can arrange any necessary blood tests or vaccinations with your local GP. Your parents may also have a record detailing all the immunisations you have had, along with the relevant dates. Make sure you retain any documents that might be needed as evidence when you have your Occupational Health appointment.
Alternatively you can arrange blood tests and immunisations through the Occupational Health Unit located on campus. Advice on costs can be provided.
If you have any queries about any medical conditions you have then please contact Julia Crawford by e-mail at j.a.crawford@keele.ac.uk.
