Currently I am Secondary Care Pharmaceutical Adviser to the Department of Medicines Management at Keele University where I support Primary Care Trusts in commissioning of medicines management services from hospital trusts in the West Midlands. In addition I support commissioners with resolution of problems at the prescribing interface between primary and secondary care. In this role I undertake secondary care prescribing analysis, provide input to MTRAC from a secondary care perspective and support achievement of “Better Care, Better Value Indicators” in prescribing. This involves supporting collaboration between primary and secondary care on prescribing.
Formerly I was Secondary Care Pharmaceutical Adviser to the West Midlands Strategic Health Authority (NHS West Midlands) and prior to this Clinical Director Pharmacy and Medicine Management Services for the Dudley Group of Hospitals. I am a past President of the Guild of Healthcare Pharmacists (1992-94) and a former Honorary Secretary to the European Association of Hospital Pharmacists (1996-2000). In 1996 I was recipient of the Medeva Gold Medal “for an outstanding contribution to hospital Pharmacy” and was designated a fellow of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society in 1997 “for distinction in the profession of Pharmacy”. In 2010 I was recipient of the “Bryan Veitch” award for services to the College of Pharmacy Practice and in the same year designated an Honorary Fellow of the College of Pharmacy Practice.
I am an author or co-author of a wide range of publications/research papers and have contributed chapters to a number of text books relating to pharmacy practice and medicines use. My research interest is in comparison of hospital medicines use. In the remainder of my time I work as an independent pharmaceutical consultant for the NHS and pharmaceutical industry.
