I joined the Dept. of Medicines Management in 1995 to provide IT support in respect of the school's service commitment to the NHS on prescribing analysis and across the range of school undergraduate and postgraduate activities. I now lead a technical and software development team and project manage IT development initiatives for a range of NHS clients, completing the design and implementation of a three-year IT strategic plan for the National Prescribing Centre (UK).
Recent development projects have included the use of Apple ‘touch’ devices and the implementation of the 'KAVE', a 3D stereoscopic teaching and learning facility in the School. My research into human computer interfaces (HCI) led to the creation of computer generated characters for healthcare training, where the learner can ‘speak’ with a virtual patient via multiple-choice questions, natural (‘free-text’) and voice recognition software.
