Community Pharmacy Programme - CPD Plus + and CPD Plus+ Open Learn - Short Courses and Modules

CPD Plus+ courses/modules have fixed content and learning outcomes. They are available as part of structured Certificate and Diploma award programmes in Community Pharmacy or as individual stand-alone short courses

 

Academic Credits
When taken as individual short courses, each provides 15 Masters level academic credits. This is equivalent to 150 hours of study, including completion of assessments.

 

Delivery Media
Principally on-line open and distance learning, with the major of resources on-line including online workshops.

 

Assessment - short courses
Case scenarios that require application of knowledge and skills.
Reflective Portfolio - to record and reflect on learning related to the short course/module and the individual's professional practice.


Modules/Short Courses
There are currently six modules that are provided as CPD Plus + stand-alone short courses/modules.

 

Developing and Delivering High Quality Services Module
Aim:

This short course/module aims to develop the learner's knowledge and understanding in relation to the past and current structuring of healthcare services in the UK, and the implications for pharmacy. The learner will develop knowledge and skills in relation to ways of measuring and improving pharmacy practice and services to deliver the optimum healthcare within the contexts of evidence based practice and clinical governance.

Learning outcomes:

By the end of this module you should be able to:

  • Demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the following in relation to pharmacy practice, patient care, and medicines management in community pharmacy and primary care:
    • Healthcare services in the UK
    • Clinical governance
  • Plan and conduct a service proposal

Clinical Pharmacy for Medicines Management Module
Aim:

The aim of this short course/module is to develop learners' knowledge and skills in relation to medicines management and key therapeutic areas for clinical pharmacy practice.

Learning outcomes:
Demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the following in relation to pharmacy practice, patient care, and medicines management in community pharmacy and primary care:

  • Key therapeutic areas relevant to clinical pharmacy practice and medicines management in primary care
  • Evidence-based practice and clinical governance
  • Interpret patient-specific data to maximise pharmaceutical care

Indicative content:

  • Evidence Based Practice & Clinical Governance
  • Therapeutics for Medicines Management - students will study two clinical areas from a choice of 5:
    • Heart Failure
    • Hypertension
    • Depression
    • Dyspepsia
    • COPD

Clinical Pharmacy for Medicines Management (2) Module

Aim:

The aim of this short course/module is to develop learners' knowledge and clinical skills in relation to medicines management and therapeutic areas for specific patient groups, for application in their professional practice.

Learning outcomes:

Demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the following in relation to pharmacy practice, patient care, and medicines management in community pharmacy and primary care:

  • Key therapeutic areas relevant to individual patient groups in clinical pharmacy practice and medicines management in primary care
  • Interpret patient-specific data to maximise their pharmaceutical care

Communication and Consultation Skills (Module)

Aim:

The aim of this short course/module is to develop learners' knowledge and skills of communication and consultation with the public, patients and other health care professionals for application in their professional practice.Completing this short course/module will provide accreditation for Medicines Use Review (MUR).

Learning outcomes:

Demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the following in relation to pharmacy practice, patient care, and medicines management in community pharmacy and primary care:

  • Communication skills and patient-health professional relationships
  • Key therapeutic areas relevant to clinical pharmacy practice and medicines management in primary care
  • Communicate efficiently and effectively with patients and other healthcare professionals
  • Demonstrate all Medicines Use Review (MUR) competencies

  • An introduction to communication
  • Developing your consultation skills for advanced services
  • Communication and concordance
  • Communication and Support for Self Care

Communicating with Other Professionals

  • Interprofessional communication (including the treatment of minor infections as an example)

Promoting Health through Community Pharmacy Module

Aim:

The aim of this short course/module is to develop learners' knowledge and skills in relation to public health and the promotion and support of healthy lifestyles for application in their professional practice.

Learning outcomes:

Demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the following in relation to pharmacy practice, patient care, and medicines management in community pharmacy and primary care:

  • The theoretical underpinnings in relation to health and health promotion, and the key target areas of public health policy
  • Evidence-based practice and clinical governance
  • Problem solve in practical situations relating to public health, patient care and medicines management
  • Communicate efficiently and effectively with the public, patients and other healthcare professionals
  • Encourage patients/clients to adopt health-enhancing/protecting behaviours

Indicative content:

  • Public health and public policy
  • The role of the Community Pharmacist in promoting health
  • Promotion and support of healthy lifestyles
  • Helping people change their behaviour

Working with Prescribers in Primary Care Module

Aim:

The aim of this short course/module is to develop learners' knowledge and skills in relation to prescribing in primary care and services that pharmacists can offer to optimise prescribing practice.

Learning outcomes:

Demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the following in relation to pharmacy practice, patient care, and medicines management in community pharmacy and primary care:

  • Issues pertaining to the provision of a prescribing support service to GPs
  • The primary healthcare team (PHCT) and the potential role of pharmacists within the PHCT
  • Evidence-based practice and clinical governance
  • Problem solve in practical situations relating to public health, patient care and medicines management
  • Interpret prescribing data to help evaluate and optimise prescribing in primary care

  • The NHS and Primary Care
  • Influencing & improving prescribing
  • Developing Skills to deliver improvements in prescribing
  • Medicines management activities

CPD Plus+ Open Learn Courses

CPD Plus+ Open Learn courses will normally use fixed content, named CPD Plus+ courses as their basis and students will develop the final learning outcomes with their Keele tutor, within the requirements that are necessary for a 15 or 30 credit Open Learn version of the module.
