Overview

This innovative MSc in Information Technology and Management course brings together components from both the School of Computing & Mathematics and the Keele Management School.  It offers students who have already acquired some knowledge of computing, the opportunity to gain highly marketable IT, business and management skills.  It is a twelve month programme starting in September, comprising of eight 15-credit taught modules (120 credits) plus a project or industrial placement (60 credits).

Aims of the Course

The aim of this course is to develop technical skills and also to gain a critical understanding of the management of Information Technology in a business environment.

Entry Requirements

MSc applicants are expected to hold at least a Second Class Honours Degree (or overseas equivalent) in Information Technology, Computer Science, or to have appropriate professional qualifications and work experience.  Overseas applicants will also need to have an English Language qualification of IELTS 6.5 or hold a previous degree from a UK university.

For overseas students who do not meet all direct entry requirements, we offer the opportunity to take an intensive Business or Computing Pre-Masters programme leading to the MSc.

Course Content

The following indicates the range of modules that may be offered and may be subject to change:

Core Modules

Accounting for Decision Making:  The module introduces key concepts and techniques in Financial Accounting, Management Accounting, and Financial Management.  The module will familiarise students with the structure of company accounts and demonstrate the procedures and techniques used in assessing that information for managers.  The module will further explain how use of structured accounting information can enhance decision-making within a company in relation to operation and organisation, costing and new project evaluation, financing, and strategic development.

Marketing and Operations Management:  This module explores marketing and operations concepts and issues in depth and provides an understanding of the marketing mix, strategies for new products and branding, and the strategic aspects of marketing.

Problem Solving Skills for Consultants:  This module explores skills such as project management, communication and team working and building.  It also provides knowledge of ethical, legal and social issues related to the development and deployment of Information Technology.

Metrics Estimation, Analysis and Teams:  This module provides students with the requisite skills and knowledge in the collection and use of metrics and their subsequent analysis for either project monitoring or process improvement.

Strategy and Information Management: This module provides an understanding of the main approaches to strategy in business and the information that each strategy requires to show how the different approaches can contribute to business success in differing, complex and volatile environments.

Systems Design: This module provides skills in software design and the implementation of business information systems in order that students can participate in and, if required, manage such activities.

Option Modules

Enterprise Information Systems:  This module provides a thorough understanding of enterprise wide information systems and their role in a modern organisation.

Systems Analysis:  This module provides an understanding of the scope, nature and purpose of systems analysis with the context of the Unified Process and the appropriate techniques for requirements acquisition and formalisation.

Entrepreneurship:  This module develops an understanding of relevant theories of entrepreneurship and will consider how to apply these theories in real world contexts, with specific reference to IT start ups and the knowledge economy.

Networks and Security:  This module gives students an understanding of contemporary networks and the abstractions and protocols which underpin them. 

Enhanced E-Commerce:  This module explores the creation of modern business systems, providing a theoretical and practical understanding of problems involved in the development of web-based, electronic, commerce applications.

Project / Industrial Placement

Provides an integration of concepts taught on the course in either an academic or business environment.

Teaching and Assessment

The taught modules are mainly assessed by coursework, with examinations in some of the modules.  Project assessment is based largely on a substantial final report.

Additional Costs

Additional costs may be incurred for text books, inter-library loans and potential overdue library fines. Some travel costs may be incurred if an external project or placement is undertaken; any such costs will be discussed with the student before the project is confirmed. It will be possible for the student to select an internal project and that would not incur any additional travel costs.
