Our part-time semi-distance-learning MBA Education (International) programme is delivered exclusively in Thailand at Harrow International Schoool, Bangkok.

The programme is exclusively recruited, taught, assessed and managed by Keele University professors and administrators. Successful students are awarded one of the most prestigious British MBA Education qualifications available anywhere.

Keele's programme in Thailand is particularly innovative because it links different modes of study, comprising:

  • modularised coursework undertaken on a semi-distance-learning basis, following an introductory session at Harrow International School, Bangkok
  • work-based research project related to your own experience and professional interests (Masters only)
  • course sessions which allow you to meet with tutors and colleagues from a wide range of professional and international backgrounds and to explore in depth contemporary issues in education management and organisation.

Our current course members are a range of nationalities working in international schools, educational councils and universities in China, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Hong Kong, India, Vietnam, Japan, South Korea, Philippines, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.

Organised and delivered through three, two day and one, one day residential (May and October) during the 18 month taught element of the programme, we also provide distance support in order to provide a high quality study programme  which can be integrated, practically and intellectually, into your working life.

This includes: comprehensive tutor notes and additional readings, assignments which can be linked directly to your work, a high quality learning environment, as well as regular on-line support and guidance from experienced tutors.

For those educational professionals in Asia who wish to undertake only a short-time programme (one weekend) please see APD information leaflet. This Advanced Professional Development programme consists of just two modules from the MBA Education (International) and is delivered at Harrow International School, Bangkok.

The MBA Education course offers a comprehensive and critical analysis of policies, issues and practices in contemporary education management and leadership. Drawing on international research, the programme provides advanced skills and knowledge of senior level education management practice.

Through examination of cross-cultural comparisons, the course develops awareness of the global context of education management and directly assists the education professional in their own career development.

The course is based on six taught modules and submitted assignments. The course materials are introduced during 4 two-day residentials held at Harrow International School, Bangkok, and then used as the basis of a theoretical/reflexive evaluation of policy and practice as experienced by the student.

The course develops research skills through the assignments and these are applied in a dissertation undertaken from the October of Year 2 and submitted one year later. The dissertation topic is individually negotiated and offers opportunity for consideration of work-based, local or national policy and professional applications.

Distinctive features of Keele's MBA Education International

The course is part-time, semi-distance learning and comprises six taught modules and a dissertation. Students attend four, two-day residentials (May and October) during the 18 month taught element of the programme. This opportunity for students of different cultural backgrounds to share knowledge and experiences is a vital aspect of this internationally-focused MBA in Education. Module-specific distance learning materials are provided for each module and introduced at each residential.

Assignments are submitted approximately four months after each introductory session.

For those educational professionals in Asia who wish to undertake only a short-time programme (one weekend) you may wish to consider our Advanced Professional Development Programme. This consists of just two modules from the MBA Education (International) and is delivered at Harrow International School, Bangkok.

The MBA Education (International) is, under normal circumstances, open to applicants who have a good level first degree or an equivalent professional qualification, along with at least two years work experience in an educational organisation, preferably at middle managment level or above.  Such applicants are usually eligible for direct entry.

As the programme is taught and assessed exclusively in English, applicants must be fluent in English language.  Where English is not a first language, proof of English language competence will be required (IELTS 6.5 or equivalent).

The course is part-time, semi-distance learning and comprises six taught modules and a dissertation. Students attend 3 two day and 1, one day residential (May and October) held at weekends at Harrow International School, Bangkok, Thailand, during the 18-month taught element of the programme.

This opportunity for students of different cultural backgrounds to share knowledge and experiences is a vital aspect of this internationally-focused MBA in Education. Module-specific distance learning materials are provided for each module and introduced at each residential.

Assignments are submitted approximately four months after each introductory session.

The six taught modules (120 credits) are:

Year 1

  • Organisational behaviour and development – the culture, operation and evaluation of education organisations, management and leadership (15 credits)
  • Quality, improvement and effectiveness – best practice and best value in the pursuit of advanced professionalism (30 credits)
  • Strategic management – planning for and coping with change in a high performing education environment (15 credits)
  • Human resource issues – individual performance management and team enhancement (15 credits).

Year 2

  • Resource management – maximising resource creativity, evaluation and audit (15 credits)
  • Research methods – introduction and guide to contrasting research methodologies, concepts and issues. The application of diverse research methods within a cross-cultural perspective (30 credits)

All modules are taught from the perspective of senior level professionals, researchers, administrators and leaders in international education.

While a significant focus is on the Western education system, the teaching has an international dimension and ethnocentric application in that it draws on research and management experience from around the world.

There are no formal examinations. Assessment is based on assignments and the end of course dissertation. All assignments are between 3,000 and 4,500 words in length and are graded according to School and University guidelines. Work that does not secure the 50% pass grade can be resubmitted.

The dissertation of 15,000-20,000 words is similarly marked and constitutes one-third of the total Masters programme (60 credits). The degree may be awarded with distinction or merit where work shows exceptional quality. All marking is full, structured and developmental. Tutorial support is available during assignment preparation.

In order to be eligible for the award of a Postgraduate Certificate a student must have successfully completed 60 taught module credits. In order to be eligible for the award of a Postgraduate Diploma a student must have successfully completed 120 taught module credits.

We recognise that the increasing development of distance-learning provision in further and higher education means that some study programmes are now offered which require virtually no contact with any other members taking the course. However, our own experience and feedback from our course members has shown us very clearly that 'taught' sessions are a vital, important (and enjoyable!) course element.

Course members frequently point to the importance of the opportunity to share ideas and discuss issues with colleagues who have different job responsibilities and backgrounds - not to mention geographical areas! Many even say how such a break from their other responsibilities 'revitalises them'!

The cultural diversity of the MBA Education (International) groups, together with the global focus of the teaching, ensures that all course members can benefit from exposure to new thinking, ideas and issues around education management and leadership.

Our ‘taught’ session timetable has been set so that, as far as possible, there is minimum disruption to everyone's work obligations. For example, during a standard two year Masters programme, you will need to attend intensive Thailand-based course sessions on only four occasions (3, two day and 1, one day, weekend residential) - held in May and October each year.

What do Keele's programmes offer me?

  • Comprehensive Tutor Packs: Key course texts can be purchased from us, are integrated with Tutor Packs and are used to guide you through your studies. Additional readings are provided for each course member, as appropriate, to help you to structure your work, and Activity and Reflection points offer challenges to help you review management issues in the light of your reading and in relation to current and previous experience.
  • Tutor Guidance and Feedback on Assignments: Assignments are submitted at appropriate assessment points in the programme and you are given written feedback designed to help your future professional development.
  • Tutor Support and Counselling: Our professional development course tutors have been or are teachers in a variety of educational institutions/contexts and are currently University teachers, professional educationists (e.g. education managers) and advisers with a substantial background in working with adults.

Will I need access to an academic library?

All the essential readings are included as part of your course pack.  There are usually one or two set texts for each module which you will need to purchase or borrow from a library.  As a registered Keele student you have the right to use Keele University library.  This means that overseas distance-learning students can access, from their personal computer, the wealth of on-line academic journals which are registered at Keele Library.

What if I experience difficulties with my job or personal life that make it difficult for me to complete my studies?

The Course Director is available to discuss - in confidence - any particular problems which may affect your studies, and it is advisable to let us know as soon as possible of anything which is likely to interfere with your studies.

While it is important to emphasise that support is always available, a neat balance needs to be struck between providing course members with the necessary flexibility of support, help and guidance alongside the need to have clear expectations and a time framework within which your goals can be achieved. There is a requirement for satisfactory progress to be maintained.

I haven't studied for years, will I be able to start again?

We recognise that some people’s study skills may be rather ‘rusty’!  Therefore, as each new participant joins the programme we provide study skills support, materials  and help – both for general and specific study-related issues.

According to recent students, the value of the course for them is apparent not only in successful completion, but also that they find the study to be worthwhile for its own sake. In addition, over half of the students who began the course have secured significant promotion whilst with us.

The following sample reflects the value placed on the course by the students themselves:

"The overall structure of the course suited me perfectly [and] the feedback on assignments was excellent" "I have really enjoyed the course and working with other students.  The support for us students was always first-class".

"I have really enjoyed the course.  All members of the staff were helpful and supportive.  Thank you all."

"The programme is very stimulating.   The tutors challenge assumptions and encourage you to think critically."

"The course can be demanding but when you've completed it you feel as if you've earnt it.  I am proud to have gone through the experience."

"Undertaking the MBA Education programme has certainly made a positive difference to my career and I have now got the promotion I was looking for.."

"A challenging and interesting module; very relevant to my current practice.   Well supported by the tutor."

"Tutor feedback and guidance was, as ever, prompt and insightful.   The texts and residential input proved invaluable to assignment completion."
