Funding Information for PGCE
If you are offered a place on a PGCE you should make an application to Student Finance England to receive an assessment of the amount of Student Loan and, if applicable, allowances that you may be eligible for. Please do not delay this application. To be regarded as what is defined as a 'recognised student', you must normally have been resident in the United Kingdom for three years prior to commencing the PGCE. Periods of residence for the purpose of study are not normally counted.
In addition, students must meet certain immigration conditions. These are indicated below. If you are uncertain about your status, we would encourage you to contact one or more of the following for advice and guidance:
- The PGCE Office at Keele (01782 7 331203/3124/33130/33192)

- Financial assessments are based on a means-test against a student's household income, except where:
- a student has reached the age of 25 before the beginning of the academic year in which s/he begins the course of study;
- a student has supported her/himself out of her/his own earnings for three years;
- a student is under 25 and is married before the commencement of their course. If this is the case, a student's spouse's income will be taken into account when making the financial assessment;
- a student is over 25 and is married or cohabiting. In this circumstance, the partner's income will be taken into account when undertaking the financial assessment.
Tuition Fees
These will be £9,000 (subject to final approval by the Office For Fair Access (OFFA)) in 2012/2013. This applies to Associates who are defined as “home students” and from elsewhere within the European Union. If a candidate is uncertain as to whether s/he falls into this category due to, for example, residing outside the UK/EU in recent times, contact should be made with Student Finance England or with the DfE. A student loan is available to meet the tuition fees and repayment only commences once you are in employment and earning more than £21,000 per annum.
International (non-EU) students should check with the University as to the level of tuition fees that they will be required to pay, as they are liable for their own fees. The proposed fee for 2012/13 is £9,000.
Tuition Fee Loan
Students from the United Kingdom and the European Union will normally be eligible for a loan in respect of their tuition fees.
Maintainance Grant
A means-tested maintenance grant, up to a maximum of £3,250 (2012/2013), is available for eligible (home only) PGCE Associate Teachers.
Maintainance Loan
Maintenance loans up to £4,375 if living at parental home, up to £5,500 if living elsewhere.

a Physics Associate Teachers with a 2.1 or first are able to apply for an Institute of Physics scholarship. The scholarship is worth £20,000. Trainees who hold the scholarship will not also be eligible for the standard DfE bursary. Physics Associates who are not awarded the scholarship will continue in 2012/13 to be eligible for the standard £20,000 bursary for those with a first, and £15,000 bursary for those with a 2.1.
If you have a PhD this is normally considered as the equivalent of a first class honours degree in respect of training bursary eligibility.
If you have a Masters Degree (not including the MA granted on application by the Universities of Oxford or Cambridge) this is normally considered as the equivalent of an upper second class honours degree in respect of training bursary eligibility.
In addition to the above all Initial Teacher Education providers have been allocated a limited discretionary bursary fund to award bursaries to eligible Associate Teachers (trainees) at a higher level than their degree class would allow. “The Discretionary bursary fund will only be available for trainees who have gained exceptional degree level subject knowledge from their careers. Trainees who believe they should be considered for a higher bursary under the discretionary award will have to have this cleared by their provider, once they have been accepted onto a course.” (TDA, 2011).
It is important to note that higher level bursaries are not guaranteed and are at the discretion of the provider.
The Training Bursaries are paid in monthly instalments over the duration of the course.
