Welcome to Initial Teacher Education (Learning to Teach/Teacher Training) at Keele University

We are pleased that you are considering Keele as a place to start your future career in what is undoubtedly one of the most rewarding professions you can choose. We hope that by searching this website, you will feel that Keele is where you wish to undertake your course of Initial Teacher Education (PGCE and /or Subject Enhancement Courses).

This is a period of exciting change and challenge for the University Sector as a whole, for schools and colleges (with major changes to the curriculum and examination system at 14-19 level) and for Keele University. These changes will enable us to take our work in Education forward, supporting and collaborating with a range of stakeholders within the community - locally, regionally and nationally.

Keele has a long established reputation in Initial Teacher Education.  In its most recent inspections in 2008 it received the highest grades from Ofsted and is now a Grade A (Outstanding) Provider of Secondary Initial Teacher Education.

We offer one-year PGCE courses in nine subjects, and 36 week pre-ITE Subject Knowledge Enhancement courses in three subjects.  Two and Four week Subject Knowledge Enhancement (Booster) courses are also offered for those who have a place on the PGCE at Keele or who hold a place on an ITE programme (PGCE, SCITT or employment based route) at another provider.

This range of provision means that we can respond effectively to individual needs and guide Associate Teachers to the course best suited to them.

We also provide Teacher Taster courses throughout the year.

For those who are successful in completing their PGCE, the University provides a number of taught Masters courses within Education and is part of the Teach West Midlands Consortium that has delivered the Masters in Teaching and Learning for the West Midlands Region.  With the removal of TDA funding for the MTL, Keele is working as part of the West Midlands Consortium to continue to offer this programme.
