I started as a consultant rheumatologist at the Haywood Hospital, Stoke-on-Trent in 2002, and became an honorary senior lecturer at Keele in 2007. I was awarded a DM after completing an Arthritis Research UK clinical research fellowship in the Oxford region.

I am a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and member of the British Society for Rheumatology and British Society of Paediatric and Adolescent Rheumatology.

My research within Keele is located in the Arthritis Research UK Primary Care Centre within the Research Institute for Primary Care and Health Sciences. I have a particular interest in chronic pain syndromes, sero-negative spondyloarthropathies and factors that influence response to interventions.

I regularly teach medical students on ward rounds, dedicated teaching clinics, seminars and special study modules. I am also a medical student examiner. I lecture on the Rheumatology Nursing MSc course, Keele. I am educational supervisor to a variety of specialist registrars, clinical research fellows and AHPs. I am mentor for rheumatology NIHR academic clinical fellows and F2 trainees in the northern West Midlands.

At present I serve on the council and the Heberden committee of the British Society for Rheumatology and on the West Midlands rheumatology service and training committee.
