Graduated from the University of St Andrews (BSc Med Sci) in 1987 and from the University of Manchester Medical School (MBChB) in 1990. Undertook postgraduate specialist training in Anaesthesia and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists in 1995. Appointed as a Consultant Anaesthetist at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire in 1998. Subsequently developed a specialist interest in acute and chronic pain management working becoming clinical lead at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire chronic pain clinic in 2006. Joined the University of Keele Primary Care Sciences department as a part time research fellow in 2007. In 2009 set up a new community based chronic pain service in North Staffordshire (IMPACT) and has since acted as clinical lead of both the UHNS chronic pain service and the community based IMPACT service.
Currently a part-time research fellow at the Arthritis UK Primary Care Centre, involved in the spinal pain research programme and developing a programme of work relating to the management of chronic pain and the use of opioid analgesics in chronic pain.

Teaching includes acute pain management for year 4 and 5 medical students, pharmacology of analgesic drugs for anaesthesia trainees, the use for analgesic drugs in the management of back pain for physiotherapists.
Also contributes to training sessions on multidisciplinary pain management for local GPs and other clinicians.
