Graduated from Manchester Victoria University’s medical school in 1985 (MBChB). Was awarded the Diploma of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (DRCOG) in 1991. Qualified as a General Medical Practitioner (GP) in 1991 gaining membership of the Royal College of General Practitioners in 1992 (MRCGP). Joined Mayfield Surgery, Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, as a Principal in General Practice in 1992 and currently continues to work at the surgery in a part-time capacity.
In 1997 became part of the North Staffordshire Aspirin Project led by Professor Peter Croft from the Industrial and Community Health Research Centre (ICHRC). The projects aim was to introduce auditable processes into North Staffordshire general practices in order to identify at risk cardiovascular patients who might benefit from taking prophylactic aspirin.
From 2000 to 2009 joined Keele University’s Primary Care Sciences Department as a General Practice Research Fellow gaining an MD in 2006. From 2009 has held the post of NIHR General Practice Clinical Lecturer in the Arthritis Research UK Primary Care Centre at Keele.
Has undertaken research into the use of aspirin in populations at risk from ischaemic heart disease. Developed a body of work investigating the epidemiology of the management of chronic knee pain and osteoarthritis in primary care.
Was awarded the BMA Doris Hillier Award (2006) for research in arthritis to investigate the factors associated with consultation for knee pain, in particular the affect that co-morbid disease has.
In 2010 the NIHR School for primary care research awarded a grant for research to investigate the factors which influence use of analgesics in musculoskeletal pain.

Teaches on the Evidence Based (EBM) medicine module of the MMedSci at Keele University. Additionally contributes to teaching EBM to general practice registrars, and local GPs on the yearly Keele EBM course.
