I started my research career here at Keele in 2008, after completing an MSc in Health Psychology. My first role was as part of the N-PRESS (North Staffordshire Presenting Symptoms Study) study, completing systematic reviews on symptoms, signs and tests that are predictive of cancer in primary care, and of interventions that can decrease delay in referring patients with cancer symptoms for further investigations.  Currently, I am working on a PhD looking at mediators of clinical outcome – how back pain interventions actually work.

I am currently working on my PhD, which involves exploring how psychological interventions for low back pain work. The first part of this degree involves secondary analysis of trials conducted in the centre (STarT Back, IMPaCT Back) to explore what factors lead to the improvements seen in patients involved in these studies. I’m also working on testing whether the STarT Back tool, a screening tool to identify patients at risk of developing chronic back pain, can be used to screen other musculoskeletal pain.
