University Court

The Court was designed to represent very wide interests in the local community, it normally met once a year and had over 200 members, the majority of whom were external or 'lay' members.  It played am important and influential role on behalf of the institution in seeing that the University was well managed, properly governed and responsive to public and local interests and concerns.  The Court served as a mechanism for - and a symbol of - the University's accountability to the wider community and to diverse stakeholders.

The Court was the formal "supreme governing body" of the University but, on the recommendation of the government, the University transferred the majority of the powers of the Court to the Council.  Its powers were previously limited to receiving reports, making Ordinances, discussing proposed amendments to Statutes for recommendation to the Privy Council in London, and appointing the University's lay officers (Pro-Chancellor etc) and Auditors.

The Court agreed on 24 May 2011 to disestablish itself and transfer its remaining powers (appointing a Chancellor) to the University Council.  The Privy Council approved a number of Act, Charter and Statute changes on 15 February 2012 removing the Court.  The University will continue to hold an annual event, which will cater to the wide interests in the local community, in the form of a Community Open Day.  The first one to be arranged for Spring 2012.
