Ordinance XXIII: Terms of Office of the Academic Staff
1. Professors, Readers and Senior Lecturers shall be appointed in the first instance with tenure of office to the retiring age. In special cases an appointment may be made for a limited period.
2. Lecturers shall be appointed in the first instance for a probationary period of three years at the conclusion of which they may be re-appointed either for an additional fourth, probationary, year or until retiring age. The probationary period may be waived, or reduced, at the discretion of the Senate.
3. Demonstrators shall be appointed in the first instance for one year. They may be re-appointed yearly to a total of three years from the date of the first appointment. In exceptional cases, on the recommendation of the Senate, a Demonstrator may be re-appointed for a fourth and final year.
4a) An appointment as Professor may be terminated by the Professor giving six months' notice in writing or, where the appointment has been made for a limited period, by the expiry of that period.
b) An appointment as Reader, Senior Lecturer or Lecturer may be terminated by the Reader, Senior Lecturer or Lecturer giving three months' notice in writing or, where the appointment has been made for a limited period, by the expiry of that period.
5. It shall be open to any member of staff to give notice as described in 4 above. If such notice is given after the member of staff concerned has reached the age of 60, the notice shall, subject to the consent of the Council (such consent not to be unreasonably withheld), be regarded as notice of retirement.
