Introduction to Governance Functions

The University’s legal status derives from The University of Keele Act granted in 1962 and before that, the Charter of 1949.  Its objects, powers and framework of governance are set out in the Charter and supporting Statutes, Ordinance and Regulations.  The corporate governance function in the University is designed to ensure that it operates within these parameters.

The Charter and Statutes require the University to have two separate bodies, each with clearly defined roles and responsibilities to manage and oversee the University’s activities: the Council (supreme governing body) and the Senate (academic governing body).

University Governance is responsible for:

  • ensuring that the University exhibits best practice in all areas of corporate governance;
  • the efficient operation of the University’s committees;
  • the provision of advice to members of the University on legislative compliance;
  • monitoring and amending Statutes, Ordinances and Regulations through the Senate, Council, Court, and in the case of Statutes, the Privy Council;

  • managing student/staff complaints, grievances and appeals to Council and to the Office of the Independent Adjudicator for Higher Education.
