Claire Rushton is a Lecturer in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Keele University and a National Institute Health Research Doctoral Research Fellow. Claire’s interests are in cardiovascular nursing of acute and chronic cardiac patients, heart failure specialism and comorbidity. Claire maintains an honorary contract with the University Hospital Trust where she contributes to heart failure nursing specialist care. Claire is currently on a 3 year secondment to the Health Services Research Unit at Keele to complete a research PhD to investigate ‘Comorbidity and changing prognosis in heart failure patients: transitions from primary care to specialist care (2C-HF)’.

Claire’s research interests include heart failure care, prognosis and the influence of comorbidity on the patient’s trajectory.  Claire has worked with the Health Services Research Unit at Keele and has investigated the influence of polypharmacy on outcomes in heart failure populations and the influence of comorbidity on cardiovascular disease outcomes under the supervision of Dr Umesh Kadam.  In 2012, Claire successfully acquired a National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Doctoral Research Fellowship. This fellowship was successfully achieved in a highly competitive national competition. This prestigious research grant has allowed Claire to be seconded from the School of Nursing and Midwifery for three years in order to undertake a PhD at the Health Services Research Unit entitled ‘Comorbidity and changing prognosis in heart failure patients: transitions from primary care to  specialist care  (2C-HF)’.
