CALL ME (Community Action in Later Life Manchester Exchange)

This is a three year, New Dynamics of Ageing a cross council research programme (Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), Medical Research Council (MRC), Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) on 'Promoting independence and social engagement among older people in disadvantaged communities'.

This project seeks to move away from an assessment of the problems associated with ageing in socially deprived communities towards a new focus on the ways in which community action by older people can contribute to active ageing in disadvantaged urban neighbourhoods.

Aims

To clarify the issues older people resident in disadvantaged communities themselves identify as important regarding social engagement and independence;

To assess the impact of different community initiatives on active ageing;

To identify the particular social and psychological processes involved in promoting active ageing through such community initiatives;

To develop policy recommendations for promoting active ageing in disadvantaged communities. Partners and collaborators Professors Murray, Scharf, Maslin-Prothero & Dr Beech at Keele University and the Joint Health Unit, Manchester City Council, and partner organisations linked to the city's 'Valuing Older People' programme.
