Mental Health Nursing
BSc(Hons) Mental Health Nursing
The programme focuses on Mental Health and Wellness. It prepares Mental Health nurses to work with individuals of all ages in diverse settings, including hospitals and in the community. Students encounter problems ranging from anxiety and depression to schizophrenia and substance abuse. This is a challenging role which demands good communication skills which will be fostered throughout the programme.
Our programmes adopt a new case based approach to learning and teaching which focuses on patients and encourages students to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for the safe delivery of effective mental health care.
All modules integrate theory and practice elements which contribute to admission to the Professional Register. Placements are undertaken in a variety of hospital and community settings, working with a mentor alongside GPs, psychiatrists, psychologists and other members of the multi-disciplinary team.
The development of clinical skills is an integral part of the programme and is supported in practice by mentors and in the excellent Clinical Skills Laboratory by experienced lecturers.
Student support is taken seriously with each student being allocated a personal tutor and having access to campus- based academic advice services.
Learning and teaching are delivered through a variety of strategies including lectures, seminars and tutorials. IT based exercises and presentations are also used to encourage work relevant skills. Assessment is undertaken through essay and examination and in practical laboratory and clinical situations.
