A celebration to mark International Nurses' Day was held at the Clinical Education Centre this week (8th May). The event was organised by Louise Vincent (Lecturer) and student nurses Emma Lake and Yvonne Windsor and included photographs of nurses both past and present and display of nursing memorabilia including uniforms. International Nurses' Day is held in May as it marks anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, who is widely considered the founder of modern nursing. The event provided an opportunity for people to celebrate the contribution that nurses make to society. The event was attended by student nurses, qualified nurses, retired nurses, Keele University staff and members of the general public. The event was a real success and raised £60 from the sale of cakes which will be donated to the charity 'Nurse Aid' which is a national charity providing support for nurses experiencing financial hardship.

The event was featured in The Sentinel on 10th May 2012.

The celebration was continued on Thursday evening (10th May) during a special service at Stoke Minster. The service- ‘Nurses and Midwives: Remembering the Past, Looking to the Future’ was arranged by the University Hospital of North Staffordshire. During the service nursing students from Keele University had their hands blessed in the hope that they may find joy and blessing in their calling and vocation.
