We were delighted to welcome Professor Tracy Levett-Jones, (PhD, RN, MEd & Work, BN, DipAppSc (Nursing), to the School for 2 days in November to, provide researchers, academics, clinicians and students with a wonderful opportunity to share her research and practice experiences around patient simulation.
Tracy is the Deputy Head of School (Teaching and Learning) in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at the University of Newcastle, NSW, Australia. Tracy’s research interests include: clinical education, information and communicating technology, clinical reasoning, simulation and patient safety. Tracy’s doctoral research explored the clinical placement experiences of students in Australia and the United Kingdom. Tracy has authored three books on clinical education, seven book chapters and more than 50 peer reviewed journal publications. Over the last three years she has been awarded eight teaching and learning awards including the 2010 Pearson/Australian Nurse Teacher Society Nurse Educator of the Year Award and an Australian Learning and Teaching Council Award for Teaching Excellence.
Tracy facilitated one workshop and two presentations, details of which are below.
- Tuesday 8th November, 2.30-3.30, Room FF37, Comparing learning outcomes for medium and high fidelity human patient simulation manikins in nursing education. Academics and clinicians welcome.
- Wednesday 9th November, 10.30-11.30. Room FF34, Don’t rock the boat: Nursing students’ stories of conformity and compliance. Academics, clinicians and students welcome.
- Wednesday 9th November, 2-4pm, room FF34, Using video simulations to teach students to predict, prevent and manage patient deterioration and promote safe practice. A workshop for academics, clinicians and students.

It was a delight to meet Tracy, and we hope that the School can now cement firm collaborative links with the University of Newcastle, through contact made on this visit.
