Dr Sue Read welcomed Rudi Harmse, Senior lecturer in the School of Information and Communication, Technology at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, South Africa, who visited the School on the 5th and 6th of August, 2010.

Rudi was visiting England for the first time, and his particular area of research interest is Consumer Health Informatics with a focus specifically on the development of support systems for individuals with an Autism Spectrum Disorder, particularly around the enhancement of quality of life and health. During his stay, Dr Read arranged a series of visits to specialists units at Market Drayton and Cheadle, and a research meeting in the Claus Moser Research Centre, to explore the potential for research collaborations and to establish networks for Rudi within this specialist area of interest. During his stay, Rudi therefore met a range of clinicians, fellow academics, researchers, psychologists, speech and language therapists, and managers and was able to view health and social care provision for individuals within the Autistic Spectrum Disorder within the UK.
