Dr Sue Read attended the 3rd International Nursing Education Today/Nurse Education in Practice conference in Sydney in April 2010, presenting one paper and chairing one session. Whilst in Australia, she was also invited to speak at the University of Sydney and the University of Newcastle in NSW as a visiting researcher and academic. The University of Newcastle spans several campuses, and Dr Read presented a workshop and a lecture at the John Hunter Hospital in Hunter, New England, NSW; a 2.5 hour session at the Stockton Hospital for people with intellectual disabilities; and a session at the Mercy Hospital in NSW. The sessions were all around various aspects of research involving loss, end of life care and bereavement involving people with an intellectual disability.

Unfortunately, due to the air traffic chaos resulting from the Icelandic volcanic ash, Sue was stranded in Australia for an additional nine days, and so took the opportunity to facilitate several sessions to undergraduate nursing students during this time.  She managed to make several connections with various colleagues that she was fortunate enough to meet during this time, and is hopeful of writing a positional paper with colleagues around palliative care in the UK and Australia.

During her extended stay in this beautiful country, she was fortunate to be staying with colleagues from the University of Newcastle at a beautiful place called Terrigal, just five short minutes from the sea. Terrigal was a ‘little piece of paradise’, and she was so lucky to have discovered this and was able to spend time there. The three weeks spent in Australia were one of the best experiences of her career; the people were so very friendly and she made several good friends along the way which she will keep in touch with and hopefully develop research opportunities with in the very near future.

Dr Sue Read, Reader in Learning Disability Nursing, is Research Lead in the School of Nursing and Midwifery.
