CLOCKHOUSE COMPOSITIONS IN PRESTIGIOUS MANHATTAN CONCERT

Diego Garro has returned from New York where he presented an entire curated concert of Audiovisual Digital Compositions created in the Clockhouse studios by Music Technology staff and students.

The concert, which was part of the prestigious New York City Electroacoustic Music Festival 2013, took place in the Segal Concert Hall of the Graduate Center of the CUNY (City University of New York), an imposing, classical architecture building in central Manhattan, in the bustling 5th Avenue, next to the Empire State Building.

It was well received by the festival audience, which included members of the public as well as world-leading practitioners of the field.

This showcase event was made possible thanks to the support of the Keele's Research Institute for the Humanities.

TV INTERVIEW ON GROUND-BREAKING KEELE RESEARCH

The findings of a ground-breaking study of 13 to 14-year-olds in 13 Staffordshire schools, which revealed worrying levels of domestic abuse among young people, were presented yesterday at the Annual Conference of the British Psychological Society in Harrogate.

As part of the research, the effectiveness of a schools-based programme called 'Relationships without Fear' was assessed. The research supports the call for domestic abuse prevention education to be compulsory in schools.

Dr Claire Fox, Psychology, who led this phase of the research said: "We found that domestic abuse prevention education can be effective in changing girls' and boys' attitudes towards domestic abuse and encouraging more of them to seek help."

Dr Fox was interviewed on BBC Midlands TV and the study was reported in the Guardian.

TREASURE HUNT FOR THE DIGITAL AGE

Eighty people came on to campus last weekend to try out a "treasure hunt for the digital generation".

Geocachers seek out these hidden goodies, guided by a GPS-enabled device which uses coordinates. The Trees, Bees and Student Fees event at the Sustainability Hub was a chance to find geocaches – small waterproof treasure boxes hidden outdoors. Experts were on hand to answer questions and offer hints and tips on getting the most out of geocaching.

Event organiser, Dr Rachel Westwood, said: "Geocaching is like a treasure hunt for the digital generation. It's a great way to enjoy the freedom of being outside and discovering new places."

GREEN IMPACT AWARD FOR SU

Keele University Students' Union has been awarded Silver in the Green Impact environmental accreditation and awards scheme run by the National Union of Students.

The award recognises the huge efforts of students and staff to recycle, reduce our carbon footprint and to be environmentally responsible.

Joan Hope, KeeleSU's Facilities Manager, said: "It is a fantastic achievement to have gained this recognition, especially as it is the fourth consecutive year we've achieved silver standard accreditation.  It rewards everyone's commitment to continually trying to improve our environmental impact and for the huge effort that goes into the auditing process."

KEELE ACADEMIC ARGUES AGAINST MONETARY POLICY-MAKERS

In a letter published in this week's Financial Times, Dr Gabriella Legrenzi (Keele Management School) argues against a proposal for monetary policy-makers to target equity prices, on the grounds of the uncertainties on the success of such measures within the current turbulent economic environment.
