BUDDING ENTREPRENEURS OFFERED CHANCE TO GROW AT KUSBP

Three ambitious start-up companies have been selected to join a two-year business growth programme at Keele University Science and Business Park (KUSBP) giving them access to new office space and tailored advice on sales, marketing, HR, performance and strategy. The successful, budding entrepreneurs will move into the new Nova Centre, located near to the University entrance, later this month.

The businesses were chosen following interviews and reviews of their business plans, which were carried out by a steering group, comprising Professor Mark Ormerod, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research and Enterprise at Keele, pictured, Lucy Delaney, Business Development Manager at KUSBP, and David Webster, CEO of the Hanley Economic Building Society.

The three companies are Inspiring Imagery, which provides affordable printing services; CIF Management Consultants and Digital Delight, which provides affordable and high-quality digital services to local businesses.

The Nova Centre will be the companies' base for two years, during which time they will be given access to mentors, financial support, sales and marketing advice, business networking opportunities and membership to the North Staffordshire Chamber of Commerce.

There are four places remaining in the Nova Centre. Companies interested in gaining a place on the business growth programme must be able to demonstrate a desire to expand and create jobs. For further information, contact Lucy Delaney at KUSBP on 01782 734603.

LEVERHULME TRUST RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP FOR SHAMELESS STUDY

Dr Beth Johnson, lecturer in Film and Television Studies from the School of Humanities, has been awarded an 18 month Leverhulme Trust Research Fellowship for her project entitled 'Shameless: Aesthetics, Style & Putting 'cool' into the TV Classics Canon'.

Through the fellowship, Beth will complete a monograph that will provide a unique study of both the original BAFTA winning British series of Shameless and the recent (2011) American remake.

Devoting chapters to the origins of the series, format, aesthetics, social realism, representations of sexuality, nation, state and love, the study will address the socio-political and thematic issues that punctuate the heart of the show, critically considering what Shameless has to say about contemporary society and analysing the original, edgy and 'cool' cinematographic culture of the show.

KEELE HALL'S EMMA STRIKES GOLD

Catering Supervisor, Emma Bell, pictured, struck gold at the TUCO / CUBO Food Service Skills Challenge at Blackpool last weekend.

Competitors were asked to use all their skills, abilities and imagination to provide a first class meal experience for a table setting of four covers and Emma produced a brilliant performance to take the top award.

Allan Jones, Keele Hall Head Chef, pictured left, took the silver award in the TUCO KNORR Chef of the Year. This competition is an opportunity for individual university chefs to demonstrate their skills, abilities and knowledge by designing a menu that is attractive and appealing to students.

Allan Jones, Luke Staton and Ruby Rainer were entrants in The TUCO Chef's Challenge which showcases the best of university catering, with teams from all over the UK battling for top honours.

KEELELINK ROADSHOW

Keele's Outreach and Widening Participation team, in collaboration with Staffordshire University, successfully completed a two-week Roadshow last week.

The Roadshow looked to transcend the usual classroom environment, to inspire and provide HE information and guidance to young people through an informative, fast paced interactive presentations, delivered by Keele and Staffordshire university student ambassadors.

Sessions were hosted in a marquee, engaging more than 1,300 pupils (Year 9-11) and visiting more than 10 Keelelink partner schools. Activities included a student life DVD, interactive quiz on student finance and careers and a Q&A session. Due to the popularity of this project, a June Roadshow has been arranged, with six schools already signed up.

BBC 5 LIVE DISCUSSION GUEST

Dr Brian Doherty, School of Politics, International Relations and Philosophy, was an invited guest in a discussion on the Olympics, Security and Protest, on the Victoria Derbyshire show on BBC5 Live last week.

He talked about the importance of the traditions of protest at the Olympics and the danger that statements by the police and government can deter participation in protest by talking about it principally as a security threat.

He challenged the idea presented by Bob Quick (previous head of counter-terrorism at the Met) that protesters should discuss their plans with the police, pointing out that recent evidence of deception by undercover police, kettling and classifying non-violent peace and environmental activists as 'domestic extremists' has made this unlikely.
