KEELE AWARDED PRESTIGIOUS QUEEN'S ANNIVERSARY PRIZE

The University was presented with a prestigious Queen's Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education by The Queen and Prince Philip at a special honours ceremony at Buckingham Palace last week.

The Award recognises the work of the Keele's internationally renowned Primary Care Sciences Research Centre. The Centre's work is focused on chronic pain (especially back pain and arthritis) – the main cause of disability in the United Kingdom and the developed world.  In 2008 it was chosen to be the Arthritis Research Campaign's National Primary Care Centre.

The Queen's Anniversary Prizes are awarded by The Queen upon the advice of the Prime Minister, on the recommendations of the Royal Anniversary Trust's Awards Council.

The Queen, accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, presented a medal and prize certificate to Keele, which was represented by the Deputy Pro-Chancellor, Ann Fisher, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dame Janet Finch and Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Rama Thirunamachandran. A group of Keele staff and students, led by Professor Peter Croft, Director of the Primary Care Musculoskeletal Research Centre, also attended the ceremony.

The Vice-Chancellor said: "We are extremely proud to receive this prestigious award, which recognises the outstanding work and dedication of the team in the Centre. While this is a great honour for Primary Care, it is also a reflection of the excellence of the whole University."

THREE COUNTIES  OPEN PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION

Pro Vice-Chancellor Kevin Mattinson last week opened the Keele University Three Counties Open Photography Exhibition in the University Art Gallery in the Chancellor's Building.

He praised the excellent quality of the work submitted for the competition by photographers from Cheshire, Shropshire and Staffordshire. Nearly 300 photographs were entered for the exhibition, which runs until 24 March, and 131 works were selected for the show.

The first prize of £300 went to Noel Bennett, of Stone, for his photograph, "Genesis". A special category, the "My Stoke-on-Trent" award, which celebrates the 100th anniversary of the federation of the six towns of Stoke-on-Trent, was won by Jon Brayford, of Stoke, for his picture "My Stoke-on-Trent'. The award was presented by the Lord Mayor of Stoke-on-Trent, Councillor Jean Bowers.

SILVER AWARD FOR KEELE CONFERENCES

Keele were, for the 12th year running, winners at the Meetings & Incentive Travel Annual Awards, announced in London this week.

Against tough competition Keele Conferences and Events claimed the Silver award for "Best Conference & Banqueting Staff" and the Bronze Award for "Best Value for Money Conference Venue".

The awards are decided on customer votes, and the fact that Keele's customers took the time and effort to vote is testament to the first-class service provided by the team.
