Keynote Speaker in National Debate

Professor Calum Paton was one of four keynote speakers at the CHKS National Debate on the NHS at the Tate Britain, London. The motion was that, "This House believes that a state-run healthcare system can no longer meet the needs of the population and that greater competition will improve the quality of care and thus secure its future."

He opposed the motion, speaking with former Health Secretary the Rt. Hon. Frank Dobson MP; and he also summed up for the opposition. Speaking for the motion were Professor Nick Bosanquet of Imperial College, and director of the 'Reform' think-tank; and Mark Adams, CEO of Virgin Healthcare.

The vote before the debate (in front of c.200 NHS Chief Execs, Chairs, Medical Directors et al) was a small majority against the motion (c 46% for; 54% against) and the vote taken after the debate was c. 35% for and 65% against.
