Astrophysics Group Wins Time at International Observatories

Members of the Keele Astrophysics Group, Research Institute for the Environment, Physical Sciences and Applied Mathematics, have again been successful in winning facility time on international astronomical observatories. Dr James Reeves was awarded 125 kiloseconds exposure with the Suzaku X-ray space telescope, to map the iron emission in the accretion disk around the black hole in the centre of an active galaxy. Dr Jacco van Loon, Professor Nye Evans and Iain McDonald were allocated 15.9 hours on NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope to study dust formed around stars in the globular cluster omega Centauri. Keele graduate student Iain McDonald was awarded continuation of his programme on the Liverpool Telescope (at La Palma) to study an unexpectedly extreme dying star in the globular cluster M 15.
