Widening Participation Pilot Project

Widening Participation has concluded a pilot project for the Student Associates Scheme. The pilot, co-ordinated by Kylie Cross, has seen 20 undergraduate students from Keele, spend a fortnight in various schools across the Staffordshire area.

They have been carrying out various teaching related tasks in English, Maths and Science, as well as conducting widening participation aspiration raising activities. The success of the pilot has ensured that the scheme will continue in coming years. It gained positive local press coverage from The Sentinel. The Scheme, funded by the Training and Development Agency, is set to expand next year to incorporate at least 50 schools, and upwards of 100 undergraduate students and will be co-ordinated as a progression for students taking on the MaSc bursary. It is hoped the teaching experience will persuade those students that have expressed an interest in teaching to train as teachers once they have completed their degree courses. A teacher's comment on one of the students he was mentoring highlighted the enthusiasm received from the teachers involved at the schools, "He has made a really positive impression on everyone, staff and students. We would love to have him back."
