Degree Days

Degrees were awarded to nearly 1800 under-graduate and post-graduate students at ceremonies held in the University's Chapel this week. Graduands and their guests attended a series of 14 degree ceremonies over three days.

Five special awards were also presented. The Keele University Team Award for Learning and Teaching Excellence was presented to Dr Peter Knight, Dr Zoe Robinson and Dr Richard Waller, of the Physical Geography Course Team in the School of Physical and Geographical Sciences. Individual Awards for Learning and Teaching Excellence were presented to Verity Aiken, a Learning and Teaching Assistant in the School of Criminology, Education, Sociology and Social Work; Patricia Black, a Senior Lecturer and Postgraduate Course Development Manager/ Director of Postgraduate Studies in the School of Pharmacy, and Dr Paul Yates, Staff Development Unit.

The Neil and Gina Smith Student of the Year Award was presented for the first time to Heather Phillips, an undergraduate final year student who has demonstrated outstanding academic excellence, together with an outstanding individual contribution to student life and the University.

Honorary degrees were awarded to: Paul Atterbury, of the BBC Antiques Roadshow, Doctor of the University, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the history of ceramics locally and nationally and in particular to adult education in Staffordshire; the former Chief Constable of Staffordshire, John Giffard, CBE, DL, Doctor of the University, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the police service regionally and nationally and in particular to Staffordshire; Professor Dame Julia Higgins, DBE, FRA, FREng, Doctor of Science, in recognition of her outstanding contribution to science and technology, nationally and internationally, and Professor Sir Keith Peters, KT, FRS, PMedSci, Doctor of Science, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to medicine, and in particular medical education, nationally and internationally.
