Oxford Dictionary Of National Biography

The Library has purchased one of the most extraordinary published works of recent times. The new Oxford Dictionary of National Biography is a 60-volume set that succeeds the first version of the Dictionary which was completed in 1900.

The new DNB represents the culmination of twelve years of collaborative scholarly effort to recreate one of the great reference works in English for the twenty-first Century. It is a collection of 50,000 specially written biographies of men and women who have shaped all aspects of Britain's past, from the earliest times to the end of the year 2000. The DNB, which includes 10,000 illustrations, takes up 11 feet of shelf space and is available in the reference area shelved at CT773.D4.

Many members of Keele's scholarly community have been involved in the project through commissioning and writing articles. They are: Dr Ian Atherton, Dr Philip Morgan, Professor Ann Hughes, Dr Lucy Munro, Dr Roger Pooley, Mr Jim McLaverty, Professor Hugh Torrens and Professor Ray Cocks.

The Library would like to acknowledge the support provided by the Schools of History, English, American Studies, Social Relations, SPIRE, Health and Rehabilitation and the Departments of Criminology and Human Resources Management and Industrial Relations, towards the purchase of this resource.
