2 July 2004Fellow Of The British AcademyProfessor John Sloboda, Department of Psychology, was yesterday elected to Fellowship of the British Academy. He is the first Keele psychologist to be so honoured, and his election brings the number of psychology fellows to 25. Fellows of the British Academy are elected in recognition of their distinction as scholars in the humanities and social sciences. Election to Fellowship comes as a culmination of a rigorous selection process in which each of the Academy's eighteen sections, organised by academic discipline, is involved. The number of fellows elected in each year is limited by statute to 35. John Sloboda is one of the leading international figures in the psychology of music - a subdiscipline which draws together psychologists, neuroscientists and academic musicians. His research interests focus on the psychological aspects of the study of music performance, the emotional response to music, the functions of music in everyday life, and learning and skill acquisition in music. Professor Sloboda has been on the staff of the Keele Psychology Department since 1974, gaining a senior lectureship in 1987, and becoming Professor in 1991. He is author of over 100 publications on music psychology. In 1998 he was recipient of the British Psychological Society's President's Award for Distinguished Contributions to Psychological Knowledge. Professor Sloboda said, "I am extremely grateful to the support given me by Keele University to help develop a subject which depends on the interdisciplinarity which is at the heart of Keele's mission. Recognition of my work by the British Academy is all the more valuable to me because it is an honour accorded by the humanities and social sciences community to someone working in a discipline classified by the funding councils as a science. I cannot conceive of an honour which is more in keeping with the interdisciplinarity for which Keele has always been a champion". |
