Jon Weinel is a sonic artist and digital music composer. He first came to Keele in 2002, completing his BA Hons in Music Technology & Visual Arts (1st) in 2005 and MRes Music (Distinction) in 2006. In 2007 he was awarded funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) to study for his PhD in Music at Keele, which he recently completed.
Jon’s main expertise is in computer music composition. He specialises in electroacoustic music, though his work also draws significantly upon psychedelic music and electronic dance music. His compositions have been performed at international conferences and events, and released through various netlabels and his own website. He also writes about a variety of topics such as altered states of consciousness, hardcore techno and psychedelic video games.
His work reflects his diverse past experiences as a visual artist, DJ, and guitarist. He has worked with acousmatic composition, electronic dance music, video artworks, laptop performances and live improvisation with electronics. In the past he has also worked on sound design for video games. He uses a range of software including Renoise, Audition, Logic, Max/MSP, After Effects and Wwise.
