Keele lecturer heads to Kenya for charity work
Diego Garro will be heading off to Kenya later in the year to help with construction work on a vital charity project.
Dr Diego Garro, who lectures in Music Technology, will join a team of volunteers with ActionAid UK to build classroom for a primary school in Marafa, near the coastal town of Malindi.
The volunteers will be working alongside the local people and will be under the direction of an ActionAid construction supervisor and skilled local craftsmen.
Diego, who recently completed a triathlon marathon to help reach his £3,000 fundraising target, said: “I began supporting ActionAid 11 years ago. Having sponsored seven children in Tanzania, Gambia and Kenya, I decided to go there myself, to those communities, to those people I so far helped only financially.
“Currently the school in Marafa is mud-walled, uninhabitable and without toilets. The construction work we are planning will help create much-needed classrooms for them to study and learn.”
