Prof. Mitchell’s research looks at the use of synchrotron X-ray radiation in determining macromolecular structures, with particular interest on several classes of biomolecules:
- DNA interactions with anti-tumour drugs, with the Institut Laue Langevin (ILL) and Keele, aims to develop new instrumentation and methods to improve the application of the varied array of techniques available on the ESRF-ILL-EMBL international campus and to obtain atomic resolution structures.
- Iron containing proteins, with the Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica (Lisbon). This work, centred on proteins that are able to safely store iron, looks at the mechanism of the storage and release of iron. These ubiquitous proteins are implicated in the protection, with a mechanism as yet unknown, of DNA under stress conditions.
Prof. Mitchell is also active in the design and construction of synchrotron X-ray macromolecular crystallography beamlines and is Leader of the Upgrade Programme Project Group laying the foundations for the ESRF Upgrade Programme.
