Description for 2024/25

This module is designed for students' who have completed Spanish 3 (or equivalent). It will further develop communication skills, enabling students to conduct routine tasks they are likely to encounter in socialising, living, studying, travelling or working in Spain. Main topics studied will be shopping, making travel and social arrangements, state of health, talking about events in the past, skills, discussing plans for the future. Cultural background of Spanish society as well as traditions of the Hispanic world (i.e. Food habits and daily meals, Easter/spring celebrations, etc) will be presented throughout the module, thus providing the foundations for further study or work in Spain and Latino-America..
The course book will give a basic outline and will be supplemented by regular video work and other materials. Students will also have the opportunity to practise and reinforce vocabulary and language structures by using computer exercises in KLE, linked to the weekly classes.
Upon successful completion of this module and provided that students apply themselves fully to the course, by attending all classes, full use of practice materials on KLE will and engaging whenever possible with Spanish native speakers, they will normally have reached level A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR - A2)


Aims
The module aims at improving students communication skills; to consolidate previous grammatical knowledge and widen their vocabulary; provide them with a basic understanding of culture specific behaviour; and enable them to become efficient language learners.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Recognise and understand basic sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of personal relevance (e.g. studies, work, hobbies, past experiences, etc.) when people speak clearly.: 1,3
Understand, summarise and extract key information from written texts related to areas of personal relevance: 1,2
Interact in familiar situations, asking and answering questions related to a range of topics (educational background, work, hobbies, past experiences, etc.), being able to ask for repetition or clarification, provided the other person talks clearly: 3
Write notes, messages and texts (e.g. personal letters or emails) related to areas of personal relevance, making pertinent grammatical and lexical choices: 1,2
Recognise and use simple grammatical structures and rules in the target language and compare them to the English language: 1,2,3
Recognise and act upon cultural differences as encountered in everyday situations, demonstrate knowledge of common traditions in the Spanish speaking world, and identify different registers and varieties of the language: 1,2,3

Admission to the module must be confirmed through completion of a language level self-assessment form
Students are only permitted to take one Spanish language module per semester.

Description of Module Assessment

1: Online Tasks weighted 30%
Online Tasks
Students will complete a series of online exercises to assess their reading comprehension, grammar and writing skills in the target language.

2: Class Test weighted 20%
Class Test
Students will complete an in-class test which may include writing a short text in the target language in class.

3: Oral Exam weighted 50%
Spoken Interaction Assessment
A 6-10 minute spoken interaction assessment to test speaking (productive), listening (receptive) and conversation (interaction) skills. Task may include presentation, role play, description or similar and question and answer. If assessments are organised in pairs or groups, individual marks will be awarded to each student.
