Description for 2023/24

This module will further develop your elementary Russian language communication skills, enabling you to speak, listen, read, and write in order to carry out routine tasks you are likely to encounter in socialising, living, studying or travelling in Russia.
Functions and topics covered will include: giving and understanding directions, making polite requests, asking for permission, discussing family and educational background in more detail, expressing likes and dislikes as well as wishes and discussing travel itinerary and future plans.
You will also become familiar with aspects of contemporary Russian culture and society through audio-visual materials and texts.

Aims
This module aims to further develop and consolidate Russian language skills acquired in Russian 3, as well as an understanding of Russian life and culture; and to develop and reflect upon strategies for successful language learning.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Recognise and understand basic sentences related to areas of immediate relevance (e.g. personal information, studies, hobbies, etc.) when people speak slowly and clearly: 1,3
Read and extract key information from simple sentences and texts related to areas of personal relevance, written in Russian, and translate them to English: 1,2
Interact in familiar situations, asking and answering questions in areas of immediate need, being able to ask for repetition or clarification, provided the other person talks slowly and clearly: 3
Write sentences and texts related to areas of personal relevance in Russian: 1,2
Understand and use simple grammatical structures and rules and compare them to the English language: 1,2,3
Recognise and act upon cultural differences as encountered in everyday situations and demonstrate knowledge of common traditions in Russia: 1,2,3

Admission to the module must be confirmed through completion of a language level self-assessment form
Students are only permitted to take one Russian language module per semester.

Description of Module Assessment

1: Online Tasks weighted 30%
Online Tasks
Students will complete a series of online exercises to assess their reading comprehension, grammar and writing skills in the target language.

2: Class Test weighted 20%
Class Test
Students will complete an in-class test which may include writing a short text in the target language in class.

3: Oral Exam weighted 50%
Spoken Interaction Assessment
A 6-10 minute spoken interaction assessment to test speaking (productive), listening (receptive) and conversation (interaction) skills. Task may include presentation, role play, description or similar and question and answer. If assessments are organised in pairs or groups, individual marks will be awarded to each student.
